Thyon
Thyon is about 180 km from Geneva Airport, a drive of around two hours and ten minutes, entirely in Switzerland. Its high, purpose-built base, Thyon 2000, sits right on the slopes in the middle of the 4 Vallées, with the village of Les Collons a little lower down, and offers wide, sunny runs linked to Veysonnaz, Nendaz and Verbier. AirportsTransfers.ch drives you up from Sion to the door of your building.

The route from Geneva Airport to Thyon
From the airport, the motorway follows Lake Geneva past Lausanne and Montreux and continues up the Rhône valley via Martigny to Sion. In Sion you leave the motorway and take the road to the south that climbs to Vex, at the entrance to the Val d'Hérens. From Vex a mountain road branches off and climbs through Les Collons to Thyon 2000. This last section is longer and higher than for many Valais resorts, which explains the slightly longer journey time; it is regularly cleared, but chains may be needed after heavy snowfall. Arriving at Thyon 2000 feels like reaching a balcony: on a clear day, the panorama over the Valais Alps is broad and impressive.
The ski area: wide slopes at the heart of the network
Thyon's home slopes are open, broad and mostly sunny, with many blue and red runs that suit families and intermediates perfectly. From Thyon 2000 you can ski down to Les Collons, take the runs towards Veysonnaz and its famous World Cup slope, or head towards Siviez and on to Nendaz, Tortin and Mont-Fort, and from there to Verbier. This central position means Thyon guests can ski a relaxed local day or a long tour across the 4 Vallées. Advanced skiers will find steeper runs and off-piste terrain elsewhere in the network, best explored with a guide. Because Thyon is largely above the tree line, it is ideal on sunny days; in a storm, the wooded runs towards Veysonnaz and Les Collons offer better visibility.
Thyon 2000 and Les Collons
Thyon 2000 is a purpose-built resort made up mainly of apartment buildings with direct access to the slopes, along with a few shops, restaurants and services. It is practical rather than picturesque: you step out of your building, put your skis on and go. Les Collons, lower down, has more chalets and a more village-like feel, with its own lifts connecting to Thyon. Both bases are popular with families who value short distances and the absence of morning shuttles. For a wider choice of shops and restaurants, Sion is a short drive down the mountain. Self-caterers often stock up there on the way in, since the resort shops are small; if you would like a short supermarket stop during your transfer, simply mention it when booking. Ski hire and lift passes are easy to collect near the main lifts, and in high season reserving them in advance saves time on your first morning.
When to go
The season generally runs from December to April. Thanks to Thyon's relatively high base, snow conditions are usually good throughout the winter, and January is often the best month for quiet slopes and cold, clear days. February is busy with Swiss and European school holidays. March brings long, sunny days that are ideal for exploring the whole 4 Vallées, though the lower runs soften by the afternoon. Christmas and New Year weeks book up early, as do transfers.
Practical tips and rest days
Saturday is the main changeover day in the Valais, and the motorway along Lake Geneva and up the Rhône valley gets busier from late morning. Pack goggles for flat light, sun cream and a warm layer, as Thyon 2000 is exposed to wind. For a rest day, the neighbouring Val d'Hérens has traditional villages such as Evolène and the curious earth pyramids of Euseigne, while Sion offers castles, an old town and vineyards. A chauffeur by the hour, for a minimum of two hours, is a convenient way to combine these visits without having to drive on mountain roads.
