Vercorin

Vercorin is about 177 km from Geneva Airport, a journey of roughly two hours entirely within Switzerland. Perched on a sunny ledge above the Rhône valley near Sierre, at the entrance to the Val d'Anniviers, the village has kept its old wooden chalets and narrow lanes and offers a compact, friendly ski area. AirportsTransfers.ch drives you up from the valley to your door, so you avoid changing between trains, buses and cable cars with all your luggage.

  • Distance from GVA: about 177 km
  • Drive time: around 2 hours
  • Border crossing: none
  • Ski area: Vercorin's own slopes around the Crêt-du-Midi
  • Best for: families, quiet breaks and lovers of traditional villages

The route from Geneva Airport

The road follows Lake Geneva past Lausanne and Montreux, then heads up the Rhône valley via Martigny and Sion towards Sierre. Just before Sierre you leave the motorway near Chalais, on the southern side of the valley, and take the mountain road that climbs in a series of bends to Vercorin. A cable car also connects Chalais with the village, but with skis and suitcases most visitors prefer to go by road straight to their chalet. The drive takes around two hours in normal conditions. The final climb is steep in places and can be snowy in midwinter, so winter tyres are a must and chains may occasionally be required.

The ski area: compact and scenic

A gondola rises from the village towards the Crêt-du-Midi, the summit area of Vercorin's slopes, from which the view stretches across the Rhône valley to the Bernese Alps and up towards the peaks of the Val d'Anniviers. The pistes are mainly blue and red, well suited to families, beginners and intermediates who enjoy a relaxed pace. There are steeper sections and some off-piste opportunities after snowfall for more experienced skiers, ideally with a local guide. The area is small enough to learn quickly and uncrowded on most days, which is part of its appeal. For bigger mileage, the larger areas of the Val d'Anniviers, such as Grimentz-Zinal or Saint-Luc and Chandolin, are within reach by car for a day trip.

The village: wooden chalets and Valais charm

Vercorin is one of the more picturesque villages in the central Valais. Its centre is made up of old larch-wood houses and granaries, a church and small squares, with newer chalets and apartments spread around the edges. The atmosphere is calm and authentic, with a few restaurants, cafés and shops for daily needs. In winter, walking paths through the forest, snowshoe trails and sledging give non-skiers plenty to do. In the evening the lights of the Rhône valley below make a striking view. Sierre, a short drive away, offers more shops and restaurants and is surrounded by vineyards.

When to go

The season typically runs from mid-December to late March. January offers the quietest slopes, February the busiest, with Swiss school holidays bringing families from all over the country. March is very pleasant, with long sunny days, but as the ski area is of moderate altitude, it is wise to check snow conditions before booking a late-season trip. For a short break, Vercorin's proximity to Geneva makes it realistic to arrive on Friday evening and ski the whole weekend.

Practical tips

On Saturdays, traffic builds on the motorway along Lake Geneva and in the Rhône valley as skiers change over across the Valais. If you can, travel midweek or set off early. Pack layers and good sun protection, and remember that the village lanes can be icy; sturdy winter boots help. Self-caterers may want to shop in the valley before driving up, as the village shops are small. A chauffeur by the hour, booked for at least two hours, is a practical way to visit the wine villages around Sierre or to spend a day skiing elsewhere in the Val d'Anniviers without driving yourself.

  • Choose accommodation near the gondola if you have young children.
  • Check the snow report early and late in the season.
  • Allow extra time for the return on Saturdays.
