Sierre
Sierre is 174 km from Geneva Airport, about 1 h 55 by motorway, without crossing any border. The town sits in the heart of the Valais vineyards, right where French-speaking and German-speaking Switzerland meet, and calls itself the city of sunshine thanks to its dry, bright climate. AirportsTransfers.ch takes you there directly from the arrivals hall, or up the hill to Crans-Montana or into the Val d'Anniviers.
- Distance from GVA: 174 km by road
- Drive time: about 1 h 55
- Border crossing: none
- Best for: wine, sunshine, walks and access to Crans-Montana and Anniviers
- Getting there: A1 and A9 via Lausanne, Montreux, Martigny and Sion
From Geneva Airport to Sierre
The route follows the A1 to Lausanne and the A9 along Lake Geneva, past Montreux and into the Rhône valley. It continues up the valley through Martigny and Sion, with vineyards climbing the north-facing slopes and orchards spreading over the valley floor, and reaches Sierre some fifteen minutes beyond the cantonal capital. The motorway is reliable year round, though winter Saturdays bring heavy ski traffic towards the resorts.
Many travellers to Sierre are in fact heading higher: the road to Crans-Montana climbs from the town through vineyards and villages, and the road to the Val d'Anniviers winds south into a deep side valley. A chauffeur can carry on to these addresses without any change of vehicle.
A town on the language border
Sierre is French-speaking, but a few kilometres east, at the edge of the Pfyn forest, German takes over, and the neighbouring wine village of Salgesch is already on the German side. This position gives the area a mixed character, visible in place names and menus. The town itself is relaxed and practical, with a pedestrian centre, a few historic buildings and many terraces enjoying the sunshine for which it is known.
Sierre also has a lively cultural life for a town of its size, with schools of higher education, a regular programme of concerts and exhibitions, and open-air events in the warmer months. Its central location in Valais makes it a practical meeting point for companies and organisations from both language communities, and its station is a stop for trains running the length of the valley, with connections towards Brig and the Simplon.
The poet Rainer Maria Rilke spent his final years in the area, living in the small Château de Muzot above the town, and is remembered locally with a foundation and exhibitions dedicated to his life and work. His grave lies in the hillside churchyard at Raron, further up the valley.
Wine and the vineyards
Wine is central to Sierre. The Valais Wine Museum is divided between two sites, the Château de Villa in Sierre and a historic house in Salgesch, linked by a signposted vineyard footpath that makes a pleasant walk of an hour or two with views across the valley. The Château de Villa also serves as a showcase of Valais wines and traditional dishes such as raclette. The slopes around Sierre grow Petite Arvine, Cornalin, Humagne, Pinot Noir and Fendant, and many family cellars welcome visitors for tastings.
Lakes, forest and day trips
Around the town are several small lakes, the most popular being the Lac de Géronde, set among vineyards and rocks, with a swimming area and footpaths in summer. East of Sierre, the Pfyn-Finges nature park protects one of the largest pine forests in Switzerland along the wild bed of the Rhône, with marked trails through a surprisingly southern-looking landscape.
- Crans-Montana, reached by road or by funicular from Sierre
- The Val d'Anniviers with Zinal, Grimentz and Saint-Luc
- The Pfyn-Finges nature park and the Rhône wetlands
- Leukerbad and its thermal baths, just over the language border
Where to stay and practical tips
Hotels in the centre of Sierre are handy for business stays and for travellers using the town as a base for several valleys. Families and skiers usually stay up in Crans-Montana or in Anniviers. The valley floor can be hot in midsummer, so plan walks in the morning or evening, and remember sunscreen, as the sun is strong here throughout the year. Autumn, with the harvest and golden vineyards, is a particularly good time to visit.
