Mâcon

Mâcon is 160 km from Geneva Airport, about 1 h 45 by motorway, and the route crosses the border into France shortly after leaving Geneva. The town lies on the west bank of the Saône at the southern edge of Burgundy, surrounded by the vineyards of the Mâconnais and within easy reach of the Rock of Solutré and the abbey town of Cluny. AirportsTransfers.ch offers a direct transfer from Geneva arrivals to your hotel, wine estate or meeting.

  • Distance from GVA: 160 km by road
  • Drive time: about 1 h 45
  • Border crossing: yes, into France
  • Best for: wine tourism, Romanesque heritage, a quiet riverside stay
  • Getting there: A40 motorway via Nantua and Bourg-en-Bresse

The route from Geneva Airport to Mâcon

The motorway leaves Geneva on the A40, heading west past Bellegarde and through the Jura foothills, a section of viaducts and tunnels that crosses deep valleys and passes above the lake of Nantua. It then descends into the flat farmland of the Bresse, passes Bourg-en-Bresse and crosses the Saône to reach Mâcon. The road is fast and the traffic usually lighter than on the routes towards Lyon or the Alps.

The arrival is gentle: the town spreads along the river, with its bridge and quays facing the wide Saône. On the western side, the hills of the Mâconnais rise behind the town, covered in vines. Because the drive is relatively short and simple, Mâcon can also be a comfortable stop on the way from Geneva towards the rest of Burgundy.

The town on the Saône

Mâcon is a pleasant, unhurried town rather than a monument city. Its riverside quays are popular for walks and cycling, and the Saint-Laurent bridge, a long stone bridge across the Saône, links the town with the Ain side of the river. In the centre, the remains of the old cathedral of Saint-Vincent, known as the Vieux Saint-Vincent, preserve Romanesque towers and a sculpted narthex, while the Maison de Bois, a carved timber-framed house, is one of the most photographed buildings in town.

The poet and statesman Alphonse de Lamartine was born in Mâcon, and his memory is present throughout the area, in museums, statues and the houses associated with him in the surrounding countryside. The Musée des Ursulines, in a former convent, covers local archaeology and fine arts.

Wine country: Mâconnais and Pouilly-Fuissé

For many visitors the reason to come is the wine. The Mâconnais is the southern part of Burgundy, planted largely with Chardonnay, and it produces fresh white wines under appellations such as Mâcon-Villages and Saint-Véran, along with the more celebrated Pouilly-Fuissé, grown in a small area of villages beneath the Rock of Solutré. Further south, the Beaujolais begins almost immediately, so it is easy to combine two wine regions in one trip. Many estates welcome visitors by appointment, and a private car means nobody in the group needs to drive after a tasting.

Local cuisine reflects the crossroads of Burgundy and the Bresse: poultry from the Bresse with its protected designation, frogs' legs, snails in garlic butter, and goat's cheeses from the Mâconnais hills.

Day trips from Mâcon

The landscape around Mâcon is rich in history. The Rock of Solutré, a limestone escarpment rising above the vineyards, has a prehistoric site at its foot and a footpath to the summit with views over the Saône plain.

  • Cluny, once home to one of the largest abbeys of medieval Christendom
  • The Rock of Solutré and the villages of Pouilly-Fuissé
  • Tournus and its Romanesque abbey church on the Saône
  • The Beaujolais villages just to the south

Cluny in particular is worth half a day: the surviving parts of the abbey, the medieval town and the national stud farm sit together in a small, walkable centre.

Practical tips

Bring a passport or ID card for the border crossing. Spring and autumn are lovely in the vineyards, and the harvest season brings a busy, festive atmosphere. Summer is warm and the riverbanks are lively. Mâcon has a TGV station a short way outside town, but local connections to wine villages are limited, which is why many visitors prefer a car with a driver for the whole stay. A chauffeur by the hour, for at least two hours, can take you between estates while you enjoy the tastings.
