Bern
Bern is 160 km from Geneva Airport, about 1 h 50 by motorway, with no border to cross. The Swiss federal city sits on a high bend of the Aare river, and its medieval old town of sandstone arcades, fountains and towers is listed by UNESCO. AirportsTransfers.ch drives you from the arrivals hall straight to your hotel, embassy or meeting, with no changes along the way.
- Distance from GVA: 160 km by road
- Drive time: about 1 h 50
- Border crossing: none
- Best for: government and diplomatic visits, history, the Aare and the Bernese Oberland
- Getting there: A1 via Lausanne, then the A12 via Fribourg
From Geneva Airport to Bern
The usual route takes the A1 to Lausanne, then the A12 inland through the Gruyère foothills and past Fribourg, before running across the rolling Bernese countryside into the capital. An alternative stays on the A1 via Yverdon and Murten; your chauffeur picks the quicker one according to traffic. Both cross the language border on the way, and you will notice road signs switch from French to German somewhere around Fribourg.
Rush hours around Lausanne and the Bern ring road are the main sources of delay. For diplomatic and government visitors, the city's centre has restricted access in places, and a driver familiar with the approach to the Federal Palace and embassy districts is useful.
The old town and its landmarks
Bern's old town is built on a narrow peninsula enclosed by the Aare. Its main streets are lined with arcades, the Lauben, which shelter shops and cafés and run for kilometres, making it possible to stroll in any weather. Along them stand painted Renaissance fountains, each topped by a figure, and cellar shops entered through doors in the pavement. The Zytglogge, the medieval clock tower, has an astronomical clock and mechanical figures that perform before the hour, while the Gothic Bern Minster has the tallest church spire in Switzerland and a tower you can climb.
At the eastern tip of the peninsula, the Bear Park beside the river continues the long association between the city and the animal on its coat of arms. Albert Einstein lived in Bern when he developed his early theories, and the flat where he lived on Kramgasse is now a small museum.
Government, museums and the Aare
The Federal Palace, home of the Swiss parliament and government, overlooks the river from its terrace and can be visited on guided tours when parliament is not sitting. Bern is the seat of the federal administration and of many embassies, so a great many visitors are on official business. On the city's eastern edge, the Zentrum Paul Klee, a museum with a wave-shaped roof designed by Renzo Piano, holds one of the largest collections of the painter's work, while the Kunstmuseum and the Bern Historical Museum are in the centre.
In summer, swimming in the Aare is a Bernese ritual: people walk upstream along the bank and float back down on the current towards the open-air pools at Marzili. It is a strong river, so follow local advice and use the marked exit points.
Where to stay and day trips
Hotels in the old town and near the station put you within walking distance of most sights and government buildings. The Kirchenfeld district across the river is quieter, with museums and embassies, and suits longer stays.
- Thun and its castle on Lake Thun, around half an hour away
- The Gurten, Bern's local hill, reached by funicular
- The Emmental, home of the famous holey cheese
- Interlaken and the Jungfrau region, about an hour away
Practical tips
Bern is compact and walkable, and trams and buses cover the rest of the city. Many shops in the arcades close earlier than in larger cities, and the old town is quieter on Sundays. Winters are cold and can be foggy, while summer brings the river and outdoor terraces to life. If your programme includes several ministries, embassies or meetings, a chauffeur booked by the hour, at least two hours, removes the need to find parking in the restricted centre.
