Val Thorens
Val Thorens, at the top of the Belleville valley, is the highest resort in Les 3 Vallées, known for its reliable snow and long season. It attracts groups of friends, families and keen skiers who want to ski from the door. A private car from Geneva Airport takes you to the resort without changes, with plenty of room for skis, boots and luggage.

The route from Geneva Airport to Val Thorens
After crossing the Franco-Swiss border, your chauffeur heads south on the motorway towards Annecy and Albertville, then takes the N90 up the Tarentaise valley to Moûtiers. From there, the road climbs the Belleville valley, passing Saint-Martin-de-Belleville and Les Menuires, before reaching Val Thorens at the end of the road, surrounded by high peaks and glaciers.
Arriving in Val Thorens
Val Thorens is a ski-in, ski-out resort designed around the slopes, and its centre is largely pedestrian. Cars can reach the main access roads and car parks, and many residences have their own drop-off points. Your chauffeur takes you as close as possible to your accommodation, and resort shuttles and luggage services help for the final metres. From the resort, lifts connect with Les Menuires, Méribel and the wider 3 Vallées area.
Practical advice for your transfer
- At this altitude, the weather can change quickly; snow chains may be required on the last section.
- Saturdays in winter are very busy on the N90; plan your return with a margin.
- Declare skis at booking; vans and minibuses suit groups of friends.
The route crosses the border, so keep your travel documents with you. AirportsTransfers.ch shows the fixed price per vehicle before you book, making it easy to share the cost of a van among a group.

Geneva Airport to Val Thorens by private transfer: complete guide
Val Thorens lies about 165 km from Geneva Airport, a drive of around 2 h 30 in normal traffic. A private transfer with AirportsTransfers.ch takes you from the arrivals hall to your residence, hotel or chalet in one go, with no changes and no waiting for other passengers, from CHF 616 per vehicle at a fixed price paid online.
The route from Geneva to Val Thorens, step by step
The journey has three stages, and knowing them explains why timing matters on a winter Saturday.
- Geneva to Annecy and Albertville (motorway). Your chauffeur leaves the airport, crosses the Swiss–French border on the southern side of Geneva and joins the French motorway network towards Annecy. From there the route continues to Albertville, either by motorway or by the road along Lake Annecy, depending on traffic and road conditions on the day. There is no tunnel or mountain pass to cross on this route.
- Albertville to Moûtiers (N90, Tarentaise valley). At Albertville the car takes the N90 expressway up the Tarentaise valley. This is the single main artery serving the big resorts of the Tarentaise, which is why it fills up on changeover days.
- Moûtiers to Val Thorens (D117, Belleville valley). Just after Moûtiers the chauffeur turns onto the D117, the road that climbs the Belleville valley. It passes Saint-Martin-de-Belleville, then Les Menuires, and ends at Val Thorens at about 2,300 m. This final climb is a winding mountain road with hairpins; it is where most of the altitude is gained and where snow conditions make the biggest difference.
Realistic driving time: about 2 h 30 door to door on a quiet weekday. On busy winter Saturdays, the N90 and the D117 can add a significant amount of time, so we always plan with a margin rather than promise a best-case time.
Winter conditions: in the French mountains, winter equipment rules apply on the approach roads in the cold season, and in heavy snow the authorities can require snow chains on the final section. Our cars run on winter tyres in winter and our chauffeurs drive this valley regularly. Because the route crosses the border, keep your passport or ID card with you in the car.
When to travel: Saturday traffic and best landing times
Most residences and many chalets in Val Thorens work on a Saturday-to-Saturday rhythm in high season. That means thousands of departing guests drive down the valley on Saturday morning while thousands of arriving guests drive up in the afternoon. The bottlenecks are well known: the N90 around Albertville and Moûtiers, and the junction where traffic for the Belleville valley leaves the Tarentaise.
- Best landing times: if you can choose your flight, land in the morning on a Saturday so that you are on the N90 before the afternoon wave, or arrive on a Friday or Sunday, when the roads are much calmer.
- Late afternoon arrivals: perfectly possible, but expect a slower final climb. The chauffeur waits for you whatever the delay, and waiting caused by a late flight is included in the fixed price.
- How we plan the pick-up: your chauffeur tracks your flight number, adjusts the pick-up to your real landing time and meets you in the arrivals hall with a name board, in the Swiss or French sector you chose when booking.
Return trip to Geneva Airport: on weekdays, plan to leave Val Thorens about four hours before your flight's departure time. On winter Saturdays, allow five hours or more, because the morning rush heads down the same road and Geneva Airport is itself very busy at weekends. If your check-out is early and your flight is late, a pick-up time that avoids the peak hour is often both quicker and more relaxed.
Where exactly you are dropped in Val Thorens
Val Thorens is a semi-pedestrian resort built around the slopes, with many ski-in, ski-out residences. In winter, parking in the resort's car parks is compulsory and private cars are not left in the streets. However, a short "minute stop" in front of your accommodation is allowed to unload passengers and luggage, which is exactly what a private transfer needs.
- Door drop-off: your chauffeur drives you as close as the resort's traffic plan allows, usually to the door of your residence or hotel, and helps unload skis and bags.
- Accommodation on the slopes: some chalets and residences sit above the road network and are reached on foot or by the slopes. Send us the exact address and any access instructions from your accommodation provider, and we will choose the most practical drop-off point.
- Getting around after arrival: a free resort shuttle serves the different areas of Val Thorens during the day, and the whole resort can be crossed on foot in about 20 minutes. Free shuttles also link the outer car parks to the centre.
- Collecting you for the return: the same logic applies; the chauffeur meets you at your door or the nearest road access at the agreed time.
Which vehicle to choose for Val Thorens
Skiers usually travel with more luggage than they expect: ski bags, boot bags and suitcases for a week. The price is per vehicle, not per person, so a larger car shared by a group is often the most economical choice.
| Vehicle | Passengers | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mercedes E-Class | up to 3 | 3 bags | Couples or small families travelling light |
| Mercedes S-Class | up to 3 | 2 bags | VIP and business travel, comfort first |
| Mercedes V-Class | up to 7 | 10 bags, skis | Families and groups of friends with ski equipment |
| Mercedes Sprinter | up to 16 | group luggage | Large groups, ski clubs, chalet parties |
For four or more skiers with their own equipment, the V-Class is the usual choice. Declare skis and snowboards at booking so that we send a car with enough room, and ask for child seats or boosters if you travel with young children.
Private transfer vs train, bus, shared shuttle or car hire
- Train: the nearest railway station is Moûtiers–Salins–Brides-les-Bains in the Tarentaise valley. From Geneva Airport you first need to reach the city, then take regional trains with at least one change, and finally a bus or taxi up the Belleville valley, which alone takes close to an hour. Feasible, but long with skis and suitcases.
- Bus from Moûtiers: a regular bus line links Moûtiers station to Val Thorens, but it only covers the last part of the trip and you still have to get to Moûtiers.
- Seasonal coach from Geneva Airport: in winter, scheduled coaches run from the airport to the Tarentaise resorts. They follow a fixed timetable, stop in several resorts and require a buffer of several hours between your landing and departure, so a delayed flight can mean a missed coach.
- Shared shuttle: cheaper per seat, but you wait for other passengers and stop at their addresses, sometimes in other resorts of the valley first.
- Car hire: gives freedom, but you drive the mountain road yourself after a flight, need winter equipment, and in Val Thorens the car spends the week in a paying car park, since parking is compulsory in winter.
- Private transfer: one car, your group only, door to door, leaving when you land. With a fixed price per vehicle, the cost per person drops quickly for families and groups, and there is no surprise if your flight is late.
Val Thorens in brief: what to know before you arrive
Val Thorens sits at about 2,300 m at the head of the Belleville valley in Savoie. It is the highest resort of Les 3 Vallées and one of the highest ski resorts in Europe, which gives it a long winter season, usually from late November to early May, and reliable snow at resort level.
The ski area: the local Val Thorens–Orelle sector offers around 150 km of pistes, and the lifts link directly to Les Menuires, Méribel and Courchevel within Les 3 Vallées, which totals around 600 km of slopes. Much of the area lies above 2,000 m. The highest points are the Cime Caron, at about 3,200 m, and the summit on the Orelle side, at about 3,230 m. The resort is popular with groups of friends, families and keen skiers, with a lively après-ski scene at the top of the resort and calmer terraces around Place Caron.
Practical tips for arrival day:
- Decide between a Val Thorens–Orelle pass and a full 3 Vallées pass before you arrive; if you plan long tours to Méribel or Courchevel, the wider pass makes sense.
- Reserve ski hire in advance during school holidays, and choose a shop close to your residence so you can carry skis home on foot.
- Bring sunglasses, sun cream and warm layers: at this altitude the sun is strong and temperatures can drop quickly.
- Take it easy on the first evening; arriving at around 2,300 m straight from the plain can make some travellers tired or short of breath.
Beyond skiing: non-skiers can take some lifts up to the Cime Caron for a 360° panorama over the Alps, try the Cosmojet toboggan run, relax in the pool and wellness area of the sports centre, go snowshoeing, dog sledding or paragliding, or walk the easy Montagnette trail.
