Val Thorens

Val Thorens is about 165 km from Geneva Airport, a drive of around two and a half hours that crosses the border into France shortly after leaving the airport. Set at the head of the Belleville valley, it is often described as the highest ski resort in Europe and forms one end of Les 3 Vallées, one of the largest linked ski areas in the world. AirportsTransfers.ch takes you up the valley to the resort itself, where most of the centre is pedestrian.

  • Border crossing: yes, the route crosses into France
  • Ski area: Les 3 Vallées, with Les Menuires, Méribel and Courchevel

How to get to Val Thorens from Geneva Airport

From the airport the route enters France and follows the motorway south past Annecy towards Albertville. From Albertville a fast dual carriageway runs up the Tarentaise valley to Moûtiers, the gateway town for several large resorts. At Moûtiers you leave the main valley and follow the Belleville road, climbing past Saint-Martin-de-Belleville and Les Menuires before reaching Val Thorens at the very end of the road. The last section is a long mountain climb with many bends, and snow chains or winter tyres are essential in the cold season. Expect around two and a half hours in normal traffic; the Moûtiers area is the usual bottleneck on busy weekends.

The ski area: high, open and vast

Val Thorens sits above the tree line, surrounded by wide bowls and glaciated peaks, so the skiing is open and exposed, with excellent snow quality for much of the season. From the resort you can ski straight into the wider 3 Vallées network, continuing to Les Menuires, Méribel and Courchevel, which gives even demanding skiers more terrain than a week allows. The local slopes suit every level, with gentle beginner areas near the resort front and challenging reds and blacks higher up. Off-piste terrain is extensive, but it is high-mountain terrain with glaciers; go with a qualified guide. Thanks to its altitude Val Thorens usually opens earlier and closes later than most Alpine resorts, which makes it a reliable choice at both ends of winter. A lift on the far side of the area also links down to Orelle in the Maurienne valley.

The resort: compact and largely car-free

Val Thorens is a purpose-built resort designed around skiing. Apartment buildings, hotels and chalets are arranged on the slopes so that most accommodation is ski-in, ski-out or close to it, and the centre is largely free of traffic. Cars stop at the entrance or in car parks, so it helps to know your exact building and drop-off point before you arrive. The resort has a broad range of restaurants, shops and après-ski venues, and a lively atmosphere in the evenings. At this altitude the weather can turn cold and windy quickly; good gloves, a buff and goggles matter more here than in lower resorts.

Best time to go and practical tips

Snow reliability is the big draw, so Val Thorens works well from late autumn openings through to spring skiing in April. January offers cold, quiet days, February is busy with French and European school holidays, and March and April bring longer days and softer snow. Saturday is the traditional changeover day in the Tarentaise, and roads around Albertville and Moûtiers can be very slow from late morning to late afternoon; arriving on another day or early in the morning makes a real difference. Some visitors feel the altitude on the first night, so take it easy on arrival day and drink plenty of water. Declare skis, boards and bulky luggage when booking, as a full ski week fills a car fast.

Planning your days across the 3 Vallées

The scale of the area is a pleasure but also a planning exercise. Skiing from Val Thorens to Méribel or Courchevel and back takes most of a day once you add lunch and lift queues, so set off early and keep an eye on the time, as the last lifts back over the ridges close in the late afternoon. Missing them means a long and costly road journey round to the Belleville valley. On stormy or flat-light days, the treeless slopes around Val Thorens can be hard to read; this is a good moment to drop down towards the wooded runs of Les Menuires or Saint-Martin-de-Belleville. A piste map, a charged phone and a fixed meeting point make group days much smoother.
