Les Menuires

Les Menuires is about 160 km from Geneva Airport, roughly 2 hours 20 minutes by road via Albertville and Moûtiers, then up the Belleville valley. The route crosses the border into France and ends in a high, ski-in ski-out resort at the heart of Les 3 Vallées; AirportsTransfers.ch can drive you straight to your residence with skis and luggage.

  • Distance from GVA: about 160 km
  • Drive time: around 2 h 20 min, longer on peak Saturdays
  • Border crossing: yes, into France
  • Best for: keen skiers, families wanting ski-in ski-out and reliable snow
  • Getting there: motorway to Albertville, N90 to Moûtiers, then the Belleville valley road

Getting there from Geneva Airport

After crossing into France, the car takes the A41 south past Annecy, or via Chambéry, to Albertville. The N90 expressway then follows the Isère up the Tarentaise valley to Moûtiers. From Moûtiers, the road turns south into the Belleville valley, climbing steadily past the village of Saint-Martin-de-Belleville to Les Menuires. The same road continues to Val Thorens at the head of the valley.

The valley road is wide and well cleared, but it climbs for a long stretch and snow is common, so winter tyres and chains are standard. On Saturdays in high season, the Moûtiers junction and the road up the valley carry heavy traffic from both Les Menuires and Val Thorens, so timing and local knowledge matter.

The ski area: Les 3 Vallées from the doorstep

Les Menuires sits in the middle of the Belleville valley's slopes and connects directly to the rest of Les 3 Vallées, one of the largest linked ski areas in the world. From the resort you can ski up towards Val Thorens, over to Méribel and onwards to Courchevel. Its own slopes are wide, open and high, with plenty of blue and red runs that suit intermediates, as well as steeper terrain for experts, particularly in the La Masse sector on the opposite side of the valley.

The resort's altitude and the high slopes of La Masse help keep snow reliable through the season, and snowmaking backs up the main runs. The resort is well equipped for families, with beginner areas close to the residences and ski schools on site. Freeride and off-piste options are extensive across Les 3 Vallées, but they should only be tackled with a qualified guide.

Many visitors buy a full 3 Vallées pass to explore the whole area, while those who stay mainly in the Belleville valley can choose a more local pass covering Les Menuires, Saint-Martin and Val Thorens.

The resort and the Belleville valley

Les Menuires was built in the 1960s as a purpose-built resort, with large residences grouped close to the slopes so that guests can ski from the door. The original centre, La Croisette, has a functional style, while newer districts such as Reberty and Les Bruyères feature more wood and stone, with a chalet-like look. The atmosphere is practical and family-friendly, and the resort is generally better value than its famous neighbours.

Below, Saint-Martin-de-Belleville offers a contrasting traditional village with a church and stone and wood chalets, linked to the ski area. Give the precise district and residence when booking, as the resort is spread out along the valley side.

When to go and practical tips

The season usually runs from early December to late April, with snow often holding well into spring at this altitude. January is quieter and cold, February is busy with French and British school holidays, and March and April bring longer days with good snow.

  • Saturday traffic: the Belleville valley road and Moûtiers junction can be very busy on changeover days.
  • Snow chains: frequently required on the climb from Moûtiers.
  • Equipment: declare skis and boot bags so the vehicle has space.
  • Ski pass: choose between a valley pass and a full 3 Vallées pass.

The return journey

On departure day, leave Les Menuires at least three and a half hours before your flight, and four or more on a peak Saturday, when traffic down the Belleville valley and the Tarentaise is heavy. The border crossing back into Switzerland is usually quick. Booking both directions together means your chauffeur can plan around traffic and your pick-up time is set in advance.
