The route from Geneva Airport to Cogne

After crossing into France, the car follows the A40 motorway up the Arve valley to Chamonix and enters the Mont Blanc Tunnel, emerging in Italy near Courmayeur. The motorway then descends the Aosta valley; shortly before the city of Aosta, you turn off near Aymavilles and climb into the Cogne valley. The road follows a deep, narrow gorge before the valley opens into a wide meadow where the village of Cogne sits, surrounded by high peaks.

An alternative route via Switzerland and the Great St Bernard Tunnel can be used depending on traffic or tunnel conditions. Both tunnels involve tolls, which your chauffeur handles, and may have queues on busy days. The final valley road is well maintained but can be snowy, so winter tyres and chains are standard.

Skiing in Cogne: Nordic first

Cogne is above all a cross-country skiing destination. The flat, wide meadows around the village and the side valleys towards Lillaz and Valnontey offer an extensive network of trails for classic and skating styles, in a setting of exceptional beauty. The area has a long tradition of Nordic skiing and has hosted international competitions, and the trails suit everyone from beginners to experienced skiers.

For downhill skiing, a cable car rises from the village towards Montzeuc, with a small number of runs through forest and open slopes. The area is compact and mainly intermediate, ideal for families, beginners and those who want to mix a little alpine skiing with Nordic days. For larger alpine areas, Pila is within reasonable driving distance above Aosta, and Courmayeur lies at the top of the main valley.

The national park, waterfalls and village life

Cogne lies within the Gran Paradiso National Park, Italy's oldest national park, created to protect the ibex. In winter you can often spot ibex and chamois on the slopes around the valleys, and the snow-covered landscape is ideal for snowshoeing and winter walks. Lillaz, a hamlet near Cogne, is known for its waterfalls, and the frozen cascades of the Cogne valley are among the most famous ice-climbing venues in Europe.

The village itself has a traditional Aosta valley character, with stone houses, wooden balconies and a church facing the great Sant'Orso meadow. It is known for its bobbin lace tradition, and local cuisine includes fontina cheese dishes, polenta and soups. Accommodation is mainly in small hotels and apartments; give the exact address when booking, especially if you are staying in one of the hamlets.

The atmosphere is quiet in the evenings, with a few restaurants and bars. Aosta, with its Roman remains and historic centre, is a good outing for a rest day.

When to go and practical tips

The winter season usually runs from December to March, with January and February the most reliable months for cross-country trails and ice climbing. Italian holiday periods and weekends bring more visitors.

  • Tunnels: both the Mont Blanc and Great St Bernard tunnels can have queues at peak times.
  • Snow chains: the Cogne valley road can require them after snowfall.
  • Equipment: declare alpine skis, cross-country skis or ice-climbing gear at booking.
  • Documents: carry the identity documents you need for travel through France and Italy.

Returning to Geneva Airport

For the return, allow around three and a half hours between leaving Cogne and your flight time, more in snowy weather or on busy weekends. Tunnel queues and border crossings are the main variables. Booking both directions together lets your chauffeur plan the most suitable route on the day.
