Saint-Vincent
Saint-Vincent is 171 km from Geneva Airport, about 2 h 15 by road, and the journey crosses the border into Italy through either the Mont Blanc or the Great St Bernard tunnel. Lying on a sunny terrace in the middle of the Aosta Valley, the town is known for its thermal spring, its casino and a mild climate that earned it the nickname of the Riviera of the Alps. AirportsTransfers.ch drives you directly from Geneva arrivals to your hotel.

The journey through the Alps
Two routes lead from Geneva to the Aosta Valley. One goes south into France towards Chamonix and passes under Mont Blanc through the long road tunnel, emerging at Courmayeur. The other stays in Switzerland through Lausanne and Martigny before climbing to the Great St Bernard tunnel. Both then join the A5 motorway down the valley, past Aosta, to the exit for Saint-Vincent and Châtillon. The chauffeur chooses between them according to tunnel traffic, maintenance closures and weather.
Whichever route is taken, the drive is one of the most scenic in Europe, with the highest summits of the Alps close by. Expect queues at the tunnels at peak holiday times, and carry winter equipment in the cold season, as Italian rules require it on Alpine roads.
A spa town with a mild climate
Saint-Vincent grew around a mineral spring, the Fons Salutis, whose waters have been used for health cures since the eighteenth century. The town became a fashionable resort, and its spa tradition continues today. Its position on a south-facing slope, sheltered from cold winds, gives it a gentler climate than much of the valley, with vineyards, chestnut woods and gardens around the centre. The pedestrian main street is lined with cafés and shops, and the evening passeggiata is a lively ritual in summer.
The other well-known address is the casino, one of the historic gaming houses of Italy, which draws visitors from Turin, Milan and further afield and makes the town busier at weekends. Conferences and events are also held in the town, adding a business dimension to its spa and leisure profile.
Castles, Roman bridges and valley heritage
The central Aosta Valley is lined with castles, several within a short drive of Saint-Vincent. The Castle of Fénis, with its towers and painted courtyard, is one of the most recognisable in Italy, while the castles of Issogne and Verrès face each other across the valley further east. Near the town, the remains of a Roman bridge recall the ancient road that ran through the valley towards Gaul. Further down, the Fort of Bard, a massive nineteenth-century fortress restored as a museum complex, guards the narrowest point of the valley.
Day trips into the mountains
Saint-Vincent is the natural starting point for the Valtournenche, the valley that leads up to Breuil-Cervinia at the foot of the Matterhorn, known in Italian as the Cervino. The resort shares a ski area with Zermatt across the border. To the east, the Ayas and Gressoney valleys lead to the Monte Rosa ski area and summer walking among Walser villages.
- Breuil-Cervinia and the Italian side of the Matterhorn
- Fénis Castle and the medieval castles of the valley
- The Fort of Bard and its museums
- The Monte Rosa valleys of Ayas and Gressoney
Food and practical tips
Valdostan cooking is hearty and based on mountain products: Fontina cheese in fonduta, cured meats such as Lardo di Arnad, polenta and soups. Local wines are produced on small terraces along the valley. Bring a passport or ID card for the border crossing, and allow extra time on Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons when traffic between the valley and the Italian cities is heavier. The town is pleasant in every season, but spring and autumn are particularly calm and mild.
