Megève
In shortMegève is about 75 km (around 1 h 10) by road from Geneva Airport. AirportsTransfers.ch drives you there door to door in a private car with a fixed price paid online.
Megève
Megève is an elegant village in Haute-Savoie, with a medieval centre, horse-drawn sleighs and chalets facing Mont Blanc. It draws families and couples looking for refined skiing and good food. Just over an hour from Geneva Airport, it is ideal for a private transfer: your chauffeur meets you in arrivals and drives you directly to your chalet or hotel.

The route from Geneva Airport to Megève
Your chauffeur crosses the Franco-Swiss border near Geneva and joins the A40 Autoroute Blanche, following the Arve valley past Bonneville and Cluses. At Sallanches, you leave the motorway and climb towards Combloux and Megève, with wide views of the Mont Blanc massif on a clear day. The road is wide and well kept, making this one of the easiest transfers from Geneva to a major ski resort.
Arriving in Megève
Megève is accessible by car, although the historic centre around the church is largely pedestrian. Your chauffeur drops you at your hotel or as close as possible to your address in the village. The ski area, part of Évasion Mont-Blanc, rises above the village on Mont d'Arbois, Rochebrune and the Jaillet, and connects with Saint-Gervais. In summer, the village is a base for golf, hiking and cycling.
Practical advice for your transfer
- Weekends in February and the Christmas holidays are the busiest times on the A40.
- Declare skis at booking; the Mercedes V-Class van takes up to 7 passengers with 10 bags.
- For couples, the First Class Mercedes S-Class adds extra comfort to a short journey.
The route crosses the border, so keep your travel documents at hand. With AirportsTransfers.ch, you can book your return trip together with your arrival and pay both online.

Geneva Airport to Megève by private transfer: complete guide
Megève lies about 75 km from Geneva Airport, a drive of around 1 h 10 in normal traffic. A private transfer with AirportsTransfers.ch costs from CHF 334 per vehicle, not per person, and takes you door to door from the arrivals hall to your hotel or chalet, with your skis and luggage in the same car.
The route from Geneva to Megève, step by step
The journey is short and almost entirely on motorway, which is why Megève is one of the most relaxed ski transfers from Geneva. Here is what to expect once your chauffeur has loaded the bags:
- Geneva Airport to the French border (about 15 minutes). From the Swiss sector, the chauffeur takes the Geneva bypass motorway towards France. Megève is in Haute-Savoie, so you cross the Franco-Swiss border near Geneva. Controls are usually light, but they can happen: keep a passport or ID card valid for France within reach rather than in the boot.
- The A40 "Autoroute Blanche" along the Arve valley (about 40 minutes). The motorway follows the Arve river past Bonneville and Cluses, with the limestone cliffs of the Aravis and Bornes ranges on either side. It is a wide, well-maintained toll motorway, cleared quickly after snowfall.
- Exit at Sallanches. As the valley opens, the Mont Blanc massif appears straight ahead. The chauffeur leaves the motorway at Sallanches, the last town before the climb.
- The climb via Combloux (about 15–20 minutes). The D1212 road rises from Sallanches through Combloux and Demi-Quartier to Megève, at around 1,100 m. There are no passes and no tunnels on this route: the road is wide, with long bends rather than tight hairpins, and has some of the finest views of Mont Blanc in the Alps.
Winter conditions. In Haute-Savoie, French mountain rules require vehicles to carry winter equipment during the cold season, and our cars run on winter tyres in winter. Heavy snowfall mainly slows the last climb from Sallanches and the private chalet roads above the village; the A40 itself rarely causes problems beyond traffic. On a snowy evening, allow 15 to 30 minutes more than usual.
When to travel: Saturday traffic, landing times and your return flight
Most chalets and many apartments in the French Alps change guests on Saturdays, and the A40 is the main road to Megève, Saint-Gervais, Chamonix and several other resorts. On Saturdays in the February school holidays and between Christmas and New Year, queues build in both directions, particularly in the late morning and mid-afternoon, and at the border near Geneva.
- Best landing times: early morning arrivals, or landing after about 18:00, usually give the smoothest drive. A midweek or Sunday arrival is noticeably calmer than a Saturday.
- How we plan your pick-up: enter your flight number when booking. The chauffeur tracks the flight and adjusts to the real landing time, then waits in the arrivals hall with a name board. Waiting caused by a late flight is included in the fixed price, so a delay does not change what you pay.
- Return to Geneva Airport: for a normal weekday, leaving Megève about 3 hours before your departure time covers the drive, the border and check-in. On a high-season Saturday, add at least 45 minutes to an hour. For a private jet (FBO) departure, less margin is needed; we agree the time with you.
You can book the return transfer together with your arrival, so both journeys are fixed and paid in a single online booking.
Where you are dropped off in Megève
Megève is not a car-free resort, but its historic centre is compact and largely pedestrian around the church and the main square, with horse-drawn sleighs instead of traffic. In practice:
- Hotels in the village centre: the chauffeur stops at the hotel entrance where vehicle access is allowed, or at the nearest drop-off point at the edge of the pedestrian zone. Hotels usually help with luggage from there.
- Mont d'Arbois: the residential area on the Saint-Gervais side of the village, with large chalets and several luxury hotels close to the Mont d'Arbois lifts. Roads are private or narrow in places, so the exact chalet name and access matter.
- Rochebrune and Côte 2000: on the other side of the village, chalets are spread along steep lanes up the slope. Some drives are icy or very steep in winter; tell us if the owner recommends stopping at a lower parking area.
- Le Jaillet and Demi-Quartier: north of the centre, towards Combloux, with easier access and many apartments.
- Combloux, Praz-sur-Arly and La Giettaz: neighbouring villages that we also serve door to door.
Tip: if your chalet has a key box, a gate code or a caretaker, add these details to the booking. The chauffeur can then take you to the right door rather than the village centre.
Which vehicle to choose for Megève
Prices are per vehicle, so the right choice depends on the number of people and, in winter, on the volume of skis and boot bags.
| Your group | Recommended vehicle | Capacity |
|---|---|---|
| Couple or solo traveller, light luggage | Mercedes E-Class | Up to 3 passengers, 3 bags |
| Couple wanting a VIP arrival at a Mont d'Arbois hotel | Mercedes S-Class | 3 passengers, 2 bags |
| Family or friends with skis and boot bags | Mercedes V-Class | Up to 7 passengers, 10 bags, skis |
| Large chalet group, seminar or wedding party | Mercedes Sprinter | Up to 16 passengers |
Declare skis and snowboards when booking. Child seats and boosters are provided on request: simply indicate the age of each child.
Private transfer vs train, bus, shared shuttle or car hire
Megève has no railway station of its own. The nearest is Sallanches-Combloux-Megève, about 12 km below the village, served by regional Léman Express trains between Geneva and Saint-Gervais–Le Fayet. Here is an honest comparison of the options:
- Train: from the airport you first go into Geneva, then take the regional train towards Saint-Gervais and get off at Sallanches, then continue by bus or taxi. That means at least two changes with skis and suitcases, and usually well over two hours in total.
- Bus: regional lines run between Sallanches station and Megève, with reinforced winter timetables but reduced service on some Sundays and public holidays. Long-distance coaches link Geneva and Sallanches. Practical for light travellers, less so with a family and ski bags.
- Shared shuttle: cheaper per seat for a solo traveller, but you wait for other passengers and the vehicle stops at several addresses or resorts, so the journey can take far longer than the 70 minutes of a direct drive.
- Car hire: flexible, but you need winter equipment, must handle the A40 on a Saturday and snow on the last climb, and parking in Megève's centre is mostly in paid underground car parks. A Swiss-sector rental also involves the border crossing.
- Private transfer: no changes, door to door, a chauffeur who knows the chalet roads, and a fixed price per vehicle. For a family of four or a group of six with skis, the per-person cost often compares well with buying several train and bus tickets.
Megève in brief: what to know before you arrive
Megève, at around 1,113 m, was developed as a ski resort in the 1920s and has kept the look of an old Savoyard village: a medieval centre, wooden chalets, boutiques and many renowned restaurants. The atmosphere is refined and unhurried, popular with families and couples rather than party crowds.
The village sits at the heart of the Évasion Mont-Blanc ski area, which links Megève with Saint-Gervais, Saint-Nicolas-de-Véroce, Combloux, Cordon, La Giettaz and Les Contamines, for around 400 km of pistes. Megève itself has three sectors:
- Mont d'Arbois: the largest sector, linked with Saint-Gervais and rising to Mont Joly, about 2,350 m, the highest point above Megève.
- Rochebrune: reached directly from the village, with sunny, scenic runs and access towards Côte 2000.
- Le Jaillet: across the valley, connected with Combloux and La Giettaz, with a snow park at the top and wide views of Mont Blanc.
Much of the skiing is between about 1,100 m and 2,000 m, on tree-lined slopes that are pleasant on snowy or flat-light days.
Practical tips for your stay:
- Choose the right pass: a Megève-only pass covers the local sectors; the Évasion Mont-Blanc pass adds Saint-Gervais, Les Contamines and the other linked villages. Buying online before you arrive saves queuing on the first morning.
- Book ski hire in advance: if you land on a Saturday afternoon, reserve equipment beforehand or choose a shop that delivers to your chalet, so you are not fitting boots late in the evening.
- Use the free Meg'bus: in winter, free shuttle lines connect the bus station with the Rochebrune, Mont d'Arbois and Jaillet lifts, which is handy if your chalet is not ski-in, ski-out.
- Arrival day: the Chamois gondola leaves from the village centre, so even a late-landing arrival can be on the slopes early the next morning.
Beyond skiing: horse-drawn sleigh rides through the village, winter walking and snowshoe trails, ice skating, spas, fine dining and shopping. In summer, Megève is a base for golf, hiking, mountain biking and road cycling, with the same quick transfer from Geneva.
