Megève
Megève is about 75 km from Geneva Airport, roughly 1 hour 10 minutes by road via the A40 motorway and then up from the Arve valley. The village has no railway station, so public transport means a train to Sallanches or a winter coach, followed by a bus or taxi up the hill. For most skiers and families, a private transfer with AirportsTransfers.ch is the straightforward way to reach a chalet or hotel door with all the luggage.
- Distance from GVA: about 75 km
- Drive time: around 1 h 10, longer on winter Saturdays
- Border crossing: the route crosses the border into France
- Nearest station: Sallanches, in the valley below
- Car is better for: skis, families, chalets outside the centre, evening flights
By train: possible, but with connections
From Geneva Airport, rail travel to Megève means first reaching Geneva, then taking a cross-border regional service towards the Arve valley and getting off at Sallanches. From Sallanches, the last part up to Megève is by local bus or taxi, as the village sits on a plateau above the valley. In total that is several stages, and the timing depends on how the connections line up with your flight.
For a light traveller with time to spare in summer, this can work. In winter, with skis, boots, helmets and children, carrying everything through several changes is a different proposition, and a delayed flight can mean missing the last convenient connection.
Coaches and shared shuttles
In the ski season, coaches and shared shuttles link Geneva Airport with the resorts of the Mont Blanc area, including Megève. They are set up for skiers and take luggage and skis. The trade-offs are fixed departure times that may not match your landing, waiting for other passengers and stops in other villages along the way. Drop-off is usually at a central point, which means a further transfer to a chalet on the slopes of Mont d'Arbois or Rochebrune.
The private transfer: door to door
Megève is a village of chalets spread across the hillsides, with many properties away from the pedestrian centre. A private car takes you directly there, which matters when you arrive with a week's luggage, skis and snowboards. Child seats are available on request, and the chauffeur can plan a short break if young children need it, though the drive is short. Snow chains and winter equipment are part of the chauffeur's routine, so you do not need to worry about the final climb in snowy conditions.
For a family or a group of friends, a Van (Mercedes V-Class) carries up to 7 passengers, 10 bags and skis. Larger groups, such as a chalet party or a company seminar, can take a Minibus (Mercedes Sprinter). Because the price is fixed per vehicle, sharing it often compares well with several coach seats plus a taxi, and everyone arrives together.
When to choose which
The train and bus make sense in summer or shoulder seasons for light travellers with flexible plans who are staying in the village centre. A coach can suit a solo skier on a budget whose flight lands during the day. A private car is the better choice for families, for groups with lots of luggage, for anyone staying in a chalet outside the centre and for evening or night arrivals, when public options thin out.
Megève is also well placed for Saint-Gervais, Combloux and the rest of the Évasion Mont-Blanc ski area. If your accommodation is in one of these neighbouring villages, the same logic applies.
Megève is often chosen for its relaxed, traditional village atmosphere, with a medieval centre, horse-drawn sleighs and gentle, scenic slopes that suit intermediate skiers and families. Many guests come for a long weekend from Geneva rather than a full week, which makes a quick, predictable transfer all the more valuable: less time in transit means more time on the slopes or in the village.
Practical winter tips
Winter Saturdays are the main changeover days in the Alps, and the A40 and the road up from Sallanches can be busy, especially during French and British school holidays. Arriving mid-week or early on a Saturday helps. Declare skis and snowboards when booking so the right vehicle is sent. If you need to leave on a Saturday for a departing flight, set off with a comfortable margin.
Booking your Megève transfer
Enter your chalet or hotel address on AirportsTransfers.ch and the price for the vehicle appears before you pay; payment is secure by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay.
