Val d'Isère

Val d'Isère, at the head of the Tarentaise valley, is a renowned ski resort linked with Tignes, combining a traditional village centre with challenging slopes. Skiers come from all over the world, many through Geneva Airport. Since there is no direct train, a private car is the most convenient way to arrive with skis and luggage, directly at your chalet or hotel.

Chauffeur's tipThe road beyond Bourg-Saint-Maurice is the only way in; check the weather before your return and allow extra time if snow is forecast.

The route from Geneva Airport to Val d'Isère

After crossing the Franco-Swiss border, your chauffeur takes the motorway towards Annecy and Albertville, then the N90 up the Tarentaise valley past Moûtiers and Aime to Bourg-Saint-Maurice. Beyond Bourg, the road climbs through Sainte-Foy-Tarentaise, passes the Tignes dam and the Lac du Chevril, and continues through avalanche galleries to Val d'Isère.

Arriving in Val d'Isère

Val d'Isère is accessible by car, and you are dropped at your hotel or chalet, whether in the centre around the church, at La Daille near the entrance of the resort or towards Le Fornet at the upper end. The ski area, shared with Tignes, is reached by lifts from several points along the village. In summer, the road continues over the Col de l'Iseran towards the Maurienne, but this pass is closed in winter.

Practical advice for your transfer

  • Saturdays in winter are particularly busy between Albertville and Bourg-Saint-Maurice; leave early for your return flight.
  • Snow chains may be required on the last section; your chauffeur comes equipped.
  • Declare skis at booking; the Mercedes V-Class van takes up to 7 passengers with 10 bags.

The route crosses the border, so carry your travel documents. AirportsTransfers.ch tracks your flight and includes waiting time if you land late, and the fixed price is shown before you book.

Geneva Airport to Val d'Isère by private transfer: complete guide

Val d'Isère lies about 180 km from Geneva Airport, a drive of around 2 h 45 in normal conditions, at the very top of the Tarentaise valley in Savoie. With AirportsTransfers.ch a private chauffeur collects you in the arrivals hall and drives you door to door to your chalet or hotel, from CHF 673 per vehicle, a fixed price shown before you pay online. No shared rides, no changes, no waiting for other passengers.

The route from Geneva to Val d'Isère, step by step

The whole journey is a steady progression from the lake to the high mountains, and the last 30 km or so are the part that matters most in winter.

  1. Geneva Airport to the French motorway (about 15 minutes): from the Swiss or French sector your chauffeur joins the motorway network and crosses into France. There is a customs post rather than a passport queue, but carry your ID or passport: checks can happen.
  2. Towards Annecy and Albertville (about 1 hour): motorway driving past Annecy, then along the foot of the Bauges massif to Albertville, the gateway to the Tarentaise.
  3. Up the Tarentaise valley (about 45 minutes): the N90 expressway climbs past Moûtiers, the turn-off for the Three Valleys, then continues on a busier two-lane road through Aime to Bourg-Saint-Maurice.
  4. The final climb (about 40–50 minutes): from Bourg-Saint-Maurice and Séez the road climbs through Sainte-Foy-Tarentaise, passes the Tignes dam and the Lac du Chevril and runs through a series of avalanche galleries and short tunnels before reaching Val d'Isère at around 1,850 m.

The key point to understand: there is only one road into Val d'Isère in winter. The Col de l'Iseran (2,764 m), which continues to the Maurienne valley in summer, is closed by snow for the whole ski season. If the road above Bourg-Saint-Maurice is slowed by snowfall, an accident or avalanche safety work, every vehicle waits, which is why we build margins into return times.

Winter conditions: the motorway section is usually clear, but the final climb can be snowy at any time between December and April. Savoie applies the French mountain law requiring winter equipment (winter tyres or chains carried) from 1 November to 31 March. Our vehicles run on winter tyres and the chauffeur carries chains; on a heavy snow day the drive can take an hour longer than usual, and your fixed price does not change.

When to travel: Saturday traffic, landing times and your return flight

Val d'Isère works largely on Saturday-to-Saturday chalet and apartment rentals, and so do Tignes, the Three Valleys, Les Arcs and La Plagne, all reached through the same Tarentaise valley. On Saturdays from late December to early April, and especially during the Christmas, New Year and February school holidays, the valley between Albertville and Bourg-Saint-Maurice fills with traffic in both directions.

  • Best landing times on a Saturday: early morning arrivals (before about 10:00) usually get ahead of the main wave; arrivals around midday and early afternoon meet the heaviest traffic, so expect 3 h 30 or more. Sunday, Friday and midweek arrivals are generally much smoother.
  • How we plan your pick-up: we take your flight number, follow the flight in real time and adjust the chauffeur's arrival. If your flight is late, the waiting time is included in the fixed price.
  • Return to Geneva Airport: on a normal weekday, leaving Val d'Isère about 4 hours before departure time is a comfortable margin. On a high-season Saturday or when snow is forecast, allow 5 hours or more. Remember that the downhill traffic leaving Tarentaise resorts peaks on Saturday mornings, when departing guests must vacate their accommodation.
  • A practical alternative: if your rental allows it, travelling on Friday or Sunday instead of Saturday is the single most effective way to shorten the journey.

Where you are dropped in Val d'Isère: La Daille, the centre and Le Fornet

Val d'Isère is a long village stretched along the Isère river, and roads are open to cars, so your chauffeur drives right to the door of your accommodation. Knowing which part of the resort you are staying in helps us plan the drop-off:

  • La Daille: the first area you reach, at the entrance of the resort, built around the Funival funicular that climbs to Rocher de Bellevarde. Mainly apartment residences close to the lifts.
  • The centre: around the old bell tower, the main street and the Rond-Point des Pistes, departure point of the Olympique gondola to Bellevarde and the Solaise lift. Most hotels, shops and restaurants are here.
  • Le Laisinant and Le Fornet: further up the valley towards the Iseran, Le Fornet is a small hamlet of stone houses with its own cable car into the upper ski area. Quieter and more traditional.
  • Hillside chalets (Le Joseray, Le Chatelard, Le Legettaz, Le Manchet): some chalets sit on narrow, steep access roads. Please give us the exact address and any access notes (private road, parking spot, call the concierge) so the chauffeur can get as close as possible in snow.

Once installed, you rarely need a car: free shuttle buses link La Daille, the centre and Le Fornet every few minutes during the day in high season, with evening services, and a free link also runs to Tignes 1800.

Which vehicle to choose for Val d'Isère

The price is per vehicle, not per person, so the right choice depends on the number of passengers and, above all, the amount of ski luggage.

VehicleCapacityIdeal for
Mercedes E-ClassUp to 3 passengers, 3 bagsCouples or small families travelling light, ski hire in the resort
Mercedes S-Class3 passengers, 2 bagsBusiness and VIP travel, private jet arrivals
Mercedes V-Class7 passengers, 10 bagsFamilies and friends with ski bags and boots
Mercedes SprinterUp to 16 passengersSki clubs, chalet groups, corporate events

For a week in Val d'Isère most families with their own skis choose the V-Class: it carries a full chalet group with luggage in one vehicle, and dividing the fixed price among six or seven travellers is often surprisingly economical. Declare skis and snowboards when booking, and ask for child seats or boosters if needed.

Private transfer vs train, bus, shared shuttle or car hire

  • Train: there is no direct train from Geneva Airport to Val d'Isère. The nearest station is Bourg-Saint-Maurice, reached from Geneva with at least one change, then a bus or taxi for the last 30 km or so (roughly 40 minutes to an hour). Realistically it takes longer than the drive, with several luggage handlings.
  • Scheduled coach: seasonal coaches run from Geneva Airport to the Tarentaise resorts at fixed times. They are cheap per seat, but you wait for the departure, stop at other resorts and finish at the bus station rather than your door.
  • Shared shuttle: priced per seat, but the route and timing depend on the other passengers, and a late flight can mean waiting for the next run.
  • Car hire: flexible, but you drive the final climb yourself in winter conditions, must fit chains if required, and then pay for parking in a resort where you will hardly use the car. One-way hire across the border can add fees.
  • Private transfer: the fastest door-to-door option, departing when you land, with space for skis, a chauffeur experienced on mountain roads and one fixed price for the whole vehicle. For a group of four or more, the cost per person is often close to that of the public alternatives.

Val d'Isère in brief: the ski area and the village

Val d'Isère shares its ski area with Tignes, long known as the Espace Killy after the local champion Jean-Claude Killy and today marketed as Tignes – Val d'Isère. The area reaches from about 1,550 m to 3,456 m, with two glaciers, around 300 km of pistes and around 90 lifts. It is famous for high, snow-sure terrain, the Face de Bellevarde Olympic run and vast off-piste. The season usually runs from late November to early May.

The village itself has kept a real mountain character, with stone-and-wood buildings, a historic bell tower, a lively après-ski scene and a wide choice of restaurants.

Practical tips for your stay:

  • Buy your ski pass online before you travel; choose the Val d'Isère-only pass or the full Tignes – Val d'Isère pass depending on your level.
  • Pre-book ski hire near your accommodation, so you can collect equipment on arrival day rather than on Sunday morning when shops are busiest.
  • On arrival day, shops close in the evening: ask the chauffeur to stop briefly if you need groceries, or arrange a chalet food delivery.
  • Altitude is around 1,850 m in the village and much higher on the slopes: drink water and take sun protection, even in cloudy weather.
  • Use the free shuttle buses rather than walking long distances in ski boots.

Beyond skiing: snowshoeing and winter walks, cross-country trails, an aquatic and sports centre, dog sledding and ice activities make Val d'Isère suitable for non-skiers too. In summer the resort becomes a base for hiking in the Vanoise and for cyclists heading up the Col de l'Iseran.
