  • Drive time: about 2 h 40
  • Border crossing: into Italy, via an Alpine road tunnel
  • Ski area: Monterosa Ski, with Gressoney and Alagna
  • Suits: intermediates, freeriders and food lovers

Getting from Geneva Airport to Champoluc

There are two main ways through the mountains. The first goes via Chamonix and the Mont Blanc Tunnel into the Aosta Valley; the second follows the Swiss motorway to Martigny and then the Great St Bernard Tunnel. Both bring you down to Aosta, from where the motorway continues east to Verrès. From there, a valley road climbs north through the Val d'Ayas to Champoluc, the main village of the upper valley.

Your chauffeur chooses the route depending on traffic, weather and tunnel conditions on the day. Both tunnels are tolled and both can have queues at peak times. The final valley road is winding but well maintained, and winter equipment is required in snow.

The Monterosa Ski area

Champoluc is the western gateway to Monterosa Ski, which links three valleys: the Val d'Ayas, the Gressoney valley and Valsesia, with Alagna on the far side. Lifts climb from Champoluc to the Crest area and then up to the Colle Bettaforca, across to Gressoney, and on to the Passo dei Salati and Alagna, giving long ski safaris across the flanks of Monte Rosa.

The pistes are mostly reds and blues, wide and often quiet, making the area appealing to intermediates. What gives it a big reputation, however, is its freeride terrain, especially on the Alagna side, which is famous among off-piste skiers. Such terrain should only be skied with a qualified mountain guide and full safety equipment.

There are also smaller lift areas within the Val d'Ayas, such as Antagnod, which can be a gentle option for beginners and families.

The village and Aosta Valley life

Champoluc is a traditional mountain village with stone-and-wood buildings, a church, and a pleasant main street with shops and cafés. It keeps a relaxed, Italian feel, and long lunches in mountain restaurants are part of the experience. The Aosta Valley has its own culinary traditions, such as fontina cheese, polenta and hearty soups.

The Val d'Ayas also has a Walser heritage, the German-speaking settlers who arrived centuries ago, and hamlets with old wooden houses can be seen around the valley. Aosta itself, an hour or so down the road, has well-preserved Roman remains, including a triumphal arch and city gate, and makes an interesting stop on a rest day. For non-skiers, winter walks, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing are available.

When to go and practical tips

The season usually runs from early December to April. January offers quiet slopes and cold snow; February is busy with Italian and European school holidays; March brings longer days, often with plentiful snow. Weekends see Italian day visitors arrive from the cities, so midweek skiing can be noticeably quieter.

  • Carry passports or ID cards for all travellers, as the route crosses a border.
  • Declare skis and snowboards when booking so the vehicle has room.
  • Allow extra time for the tunnels at peak weekend hours.
  • Plan meals: Italian mountain restaurants are popular, and lunch is an event.

Returning to Geneva Airport

On the return, allow at least 2 hours 40 minutes plus a margin for tunnel queues or weather. Aim to be at Geneva Airport two hours before your flight. On peak Saturdays, an earlier start is wise. We can also plan a different route back if one tunnel is congested or closed.

Some visitors combine a ski week in Champoluc with a few days elsewhere in northern Italy or in Switzerland. Because we arrange one-way and return trips separately, it is easy to be dropped in Champoluc and collected from Gressoney or Alagna at the end of a ski safari, or to stop in Aosta for an afternoon on the way back. Simply give the addresses and times when you book.
