From Geneva Airport to L'Alpe d'Huez

The drive starts on the A41 towards Annecy and Chambéry, continuing to Grenoble. Skirting the city, you head into the Romanche valley on the main road towards Briançon, passing Vizille and the narrow gorges before the valley widens at Bourg-d'Oisans. From there the road to the resort climbs the mountainside in 21 numbered hairpins, each named after a winner of the Tour de France stage that finishes at the top.

The hairpins are wide and well maintained, but in snow they demand care, and chains or winter tyres are compulsory in winter conditions. The busiest times are Saturday mornings and afternoons in high season, when traffic on the Romanche valley road and the climb itself can slow to a crawl. Avoiding the peak hours makes a real difference to the journey.

The Alpe d'Huez Grand Domaine

L'Alpe d'Huez sits at the heart of one of the large ski areas of the French Alps, the Alpe d'Huez Grand Domaine. It links the main resort with Vaujany, Oz-en-Oisans, Auris-en-Oisans and Villard-Reculas, offering an extensive network of runs from gentle nursery slopes near the resort to high, steep terrain beneath the Pic Blanc, which rises above 3,300 metres.

One of the area's most famous runs is the Sarenne, a long black piste that descends from the glacier area into the Sarenne gorge and is often described as one of the longest black runs in the Alps. Despite its grading, much of it is manageable for confident intermediates in good conditions. Off-piste options are many, but always go with a mountain guide.

Beginners are well catered for with wide, gentle slopes just above the resort and dedicated learning zones. Intermediate skiers have a huge playground, while experts can test themselves on steep couloirs and long descents.

The resort: sunshine and choice

Known as the Island in the Sun, L'Alpe d'Huez is famous for its sunny orientation, with the main resort facing south-west across the Oisans mountains. It is a large, lively resort with several districts, from the older centre near the church to newer quarters spread across the slope. Accommodation ranges from apartments to chalets and hotels, and there is a good choice of bars and restaurants for the evenings.

The modern church, Notre-Dame-des-Neiges, with its distinctive tent-like shape and organ, is a local landmark. Non-skiers can enjoy ice skating, winter walking, a sports centre and the views from the high lifts. Because the resort spreads out, check the location of your accommodation relative to the lifts and shuttle stops.

When to go and practical tips

The season usually runs from December to April. January is often cold and calm, ideal for those seeking quieter slopes. February holidays bring crowds and heavy road traffic; March and early April offer longer days and the sunny terraces the resort is known for, though lower slopes can soften by the afternoon.

  • Plan arrival times to avoid the Saturday peak on the Romanche valley road.
  • Pack sun protection: the resort is famously sunny.
  • Declare skis, snowboards and boot bags when you book.
  • Request child seats in advance if travelling with young children.

Planning your return

Departure day needs planning. Allow the full drive time plus at least an hour's buffer on peak Saturdays, and aim to be at the airport two hours before your flight. If snow falls, the descent of the hairpins slows, so we may suggest an earlier pick-up. Midweek departures are generally calmer and faster.

Bear in mind that hire shops, accommodation check-out and the walk to the meeting point all take time in a resort this size. Tell us exactly where you are staying when you book, and your chauffeur will come to that address rather than a central drop-off point, so you can load skis and luggage straight from the door.

Booking your transfer to L'Alpe d'Huez

AirportsTransfers.ch makes the transfer simple. Choose your vehicle and the fixed price appears before payment, which you make online by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. Your chauffeur follows your flight, waits in arrivals with your name on a sign and adjusts if the flight is late. Families and groups with skis usually choose a Mercedes V-Class for up to seven passengers, while a Sprinter minibus suits larger parties. Child seats are available on request; please declare skis at booking. Questions? Call or WhatsApp +41 78 346 56 77, 24/7.
