The route from Geneva Airport
The trip follows the A41 past Annecy and Chambéry, continuing to Grenoble. From there you head into the Romanche valley. Instead of continuing to Bourg-d'Oisans, you turn off towards Allemond and the Eau d'Olle valley, then take a short climbing road up to Vaujany, perched on the mountainside opposite Oz-en-Oisans.
The final ascent is relatively short compared with other Oisans resorts, which makes Vaujany easier to reach in winter. Nonetheless, winter equipment is required in snow. As with all resorts in the Oisans, the Romanche valley road is busy on Saturdays, so plan arrival and departure accordingly.
Into the Alpe d'Huez Grand Domaine
Vaujany's main asset is its access to the Alpe d'Huez Grand Domaine. A large cable car rises from the village to the Alpette area, connecting with lifts that lead up towards the Dôme des Rousses and over to Alpe d'Huez. From Vaujany, you can therefore explore a huge network of pistes covering all levels, and still come home to a quiet village.
Vaujany's lift company has invested heavily over the years, and the cable car is one of the larger ones in the French Alps, carrying many skiers at once and making quick work of the climb out of the valley. Close to the village, the Montfrais sector offers gentle slopes ideal for beginners and children, and tree-lined runs that are useful in poor visibility. The link to Oz-en-Oisans is also close by. Intermediate and advanced skiers will find the big runs, high bowls and off-piste of the wider area within reach, though off-piste should only be skied with a guide.
Village life in Vaujany
Vaujany is a small, traditional village with a community feel, set on a sunny balcony above the Eau d'Olle valley and facing the Grandes Rousses mountains. The village developed thanks in part to income from the hydroelectric dams in the valley, which explains its good public facilities for a place of its size, including a sports centre with an ice rink and swimming pool.
Evenings are calm and centred on a few bars and restaurants, which suits families and groups wanting a peaceful stay. Hamlets nearby keep the old character of the valley. The quiet atmosphere is a deliberate contrast with the busier Alpe d'Huez.
Because Vaujany is small, it appeals to visitors who want to step out of their chalet and be on the cable car within minutes, without the bustle of a big resort. The trade-off is fewer shops and restaurants, so many guests stock up in the valley or in Bourg-d'Oisans before arriving. If you would like a short supermarket stop on the way from the airport, mention it when booking and we will build it into the schedule.
When to go and practical tips
The season runs from December to April. January is generally quiet; February brings school holidays and fuller slopes; March offers more sunshine and longer days. Because the lower slopes near Vaujany sit at moderate altitude, snow cover in the village can vary, but the cable car takes you quickly to higher, more reliable snow.
- Check the cable car's last run back to Vaujany when skiing far away in the Grand Domaine.
- Declare skis and snowboards when booking to ensure enough space.
- Pack swimwear for the village pool.
- Request child seats when booking for young children.
Returning to Geneva Airport
On departure day, the short descent from Vaujany is quick, but the Romanche valley road and the Grenoble area can be congested on Saturdays. Allow the full drive time plus a margin and aim to be at the airport two hours before your flight. In fresh snow, we may suggest leaving earlier.
It also helps to consider the timing of your last ski day. If you fly home on a Saturday afternoon, skiing on the Friday and packing in the evening keeps departure morning calm. Families with young children often appreciate a short stop on the motorway, which your chauffeur can include without fuss.
