Oz-en-Oisans

Oz-en-Oisans is 199 km from Geneva Airport, about 2 hours 20 minutes by road via Chambéry, Grenoble and the Romanche valley. The route crosses the border into France just after the airport. It is a small, purpose-built station plugged directly into the large Alpe d'Huez ski area, and AirportsTransfers.ch can take you right to the foot of the slopes.

  • Distance from GVA: 199 km
  • Drive time: about 2 h 20
  • Border crossing: Switzerland to France
  • Ski area: Alpe d'Huez Grand Domaine
  • Suits: families and groups wanting ski-in, ski-out convenience

The route from Geneva Airport to Oz

The drive follows the A41 south past Annecy to Chambéry, then continues to Grenoble. From the Grenoble area you head up the Romanche valley on the main road towards Bourg-d'Oisans. Before reaching Bourg-d'Oisans, a turn near Rochetaillée leads towards Allemond and then up a mountain road to Oz-en-Oisans station.

The motorway part is simple, though the approaches to Grenoble can be congested at peak times. The Romanche valley road is busy on Saturdays in winter, as it serves several large resorts. The final climb to the station is short compared with some Oisans roads, but it is still a mountain road where chains may be needed after snow.

Skiing from Oz into the Alpe d'Huez Grand Domaine

Oz-en-Oisans is one of the gateways to the Alpe d'Huez Grand Domaine, one of the larger ski areas in the French Alps. From the station, a gondola rises towards the heart of the domain, connecting with lifts that lead up to the high slopes and over to Alpe d'Huez itself. You therefore have access to a very large network of runs while staying somewhere small.

The slopes directly around Oz are largely tree-lined, which helps visibility on stormy days when the high open ground above Alpe d'Huez is less pleasant. Higher up there is everything from gentle cruising to demanding blacks and well-known off-piste terrain, for which a guide is essential.

Life in Oz-en-Oisans station

The station was built for skiing, and it shows: accommodation is mostly in apartments and chalets close to the pistes, the core is largely pedestrian, and you can often clip in near your door. This makes Oz a practical choice for families and groups who want to minimise walking in ski boots.

The flip side is that evening life is quiet, with a small selection of bars and shops. For more choice, Alpe d'Huez is a lift ride away during the day. The original village of Oz lies lower down the mountainside and keeps a more traditional character.

Neighbouring Vaujany, also connected to the Grand Domaine, is close by across the valley, and many visitors find that the smaller stations on this side of the area give quicker access to the lifts in the mornings than staying in Alpe d'Huez itself. For a first visit, it is worth studying the piste map in advance so you know which lifts bring you home to Oz at the end of the day, as missing the last connection means a long way round by road.

When to go and what to pack

The season typically runs from December to April. Because Oz is lower than Alpe d'Huez, snow at village level can be thinner early or late in the season, but lifts take you quickly up to more reliable snow. February holidays are busy; January and March are often quieter, with March offering longer days.

  • Winter equipment is required on French mountain roads in winter; our vehicles are ready for it.
  • Declare skis and snowboards when booking so the correct vehicle is sent.
  • Bring sunglasses and sun cream: the Oisans is known for sunny weather.
  • If you are self-catering, plan shopping, as the station has limited shops.

Returning to Geneva Airport

Saturday is the main changeover day, and the Romanche valley road can slow down as several resorts empty at once. Leave Oz with the full drive time plus a comfortable buffer, and aim to arrive at the airport about two hours before your flight. In snowy conditions we may advise leaving earlier. A Sunday or midweek return, if your flights allow it, usually means a smoother drive.

Leaving the station also means handing back keys, packing ski equipment and possibly returning hired gear, so agree a pick-up time that gives you room for all of that. Your chauffeur will wait at the address you give, and we can adjust the time in advance if your plans change.
