Pila

Pila is about 147 km from Geneva Airport, roughly 2 hours 5 minutes by road, usually via Chamonix and the Mont Blanc Tunnel, then down to Aosta. The route crosses the border into France and then into Italy, and ends on a broad mountain shelf above the Aosta valley; AirportsTransfers.ch can drive you all the way to your accommodation in Pila or in Aosta.

  • Distance from GVA: about 147 km
  • Drive time: around 2 h 05 min
  • Border crossing: yes, into France and then into Italy
  • Best for: intermediate skiing, Alpine panoramas and combining skiing with an Italian city
  • Getting there: motorway to Chamonix, the Mont Blanc Tunnel, then the Aosta valley

The journey from Geneva Airport to Pila

The usual route crosses into France and follows the A40 motorway, the so-called white motorway, along the Arve valley towards Chamonix. The car then passes through the Mont Blanc Tunnel under the highest mountain in Western Europe and emerges in Italy near Courmayeur. From there the motorway runs down the Aosta valley to the city of Aosta, and a winding road climbs to Pila on the slopes above it.

An alternative route crosses Switzerland via Martigny and the Great St Bernard Tunnel, which can be useful depending on traffic or tunnel conditions. Both involve tunnel tolls and occasional queues at peak times, which your chauffeur handles. A gondola also connects central Aosta directly with Pila, so staying in the city and riding up each morning is a real option.

The ski area: cruising runs and big views

Pila is a mid-sized ski area with a modern lift system, spread across a wide bowl of slopes and forest above the city. The pistes are predominantly red and blue, making it a superb intermediate resort, with a few steeper black runs at the top for confident skiers. Snowmaking supports the main runs when natural snowfall is light.

The views are the signature of Pila: from the upper lifts you can see a long line of famous Alpine giants, including Mont Blanc, the Matterhorn and Monte Rosa on clear days, as well as the Gran Paradiso massif. Off-piste lines exist from the upper sectors, but these should be skied with a local guide. Snowpark facilities and a family-friendly atmosphere round off the offer.

One appeal of Pila for travellers flying into Geneva is variety in a short time: within around two hours of landing you are in a different country, with a different cuisine and language, yet the drive itself is shorter than to many French mega-resorts. The Aosta valley also offers other ski areas, such as Courmayeur and Cervinia, for skiers who want to combine several resorts during a longer trip, and the Mont Blanc views on the way through Chamonix are a bonus.

Pila and the city of Aosta

Pila itself is a compact purpose-built resort with apartments, hotels and a few shops, most of it close to the slopes. What makes it special is the city below: Aosta has a Roman heritage, with a triumphal arch, theatre remains and city gates, and a lively old town of narrow streets, cafés and shops. Evenings in Aosta offer Italian food and wine, from fontina cheese dishes to local Valle d'Aosta wines.

Staying in Aosta and taking the gondola up suits those who want city life; staying in Pila suits skiers who want to be on the snow first thing. Either way, give us the address when booking so your chauffeur can drop you at the right place.

When to go and practical tips

Pila's season typically runs from early December into April. January and February offer cold, reliable snow, while March brings longer, warmer days. Italian holiday periods and weekends are busier, as Pila is popular with day skiers from Turin and Milan.

  • Tunnels: both the Mont Blanc and Great St Bernard tunnels can have queues at peak times.
  • Snow chains: the road from Aosta to Pila may require them after snowfall.
  • Documents: bring the identity documents you need for travel through France and Italy.
  • Skis: declare them at booking so the vehicle has room.

Returning to Geneva Airport

Allow around three and a half hours between leaving Pila and your flight, more if snow is forecast or if you travel on a busy weekend. Tunnel queues and border crossings are the main variables. Booking the return when you book your arrival means your chauffeur can plan the best route on the day.
