The route from Geneva Airport
Leaving Switzerland behind, the car heads south on the A41 past Annecy, or via Chambéry, towards Albertville. From there the N90 expressway follows the Isère up the Tarentaise valley to Moûtiers. Instead of continuing up the main valley, you turn off into the Bozel valley, the same road that leads towards Courchevel and Pralognan. After Bozel, a smaller road climbs to Champagny-en-Vanoise, which sits on a sunny slope at the entrance to a long, wild side valley.
The final section is narrower and steeper, so winter tyres and chains are important after snowfall. The overall time reflects the mountain roads and the Moûtiers junction, which can be congested on Saturdays in high season.
The ski area: straight into Paradiski
Champagny's gondola rises from the village to the slopes of La Plagne, one of France's large ski areas. La Plagne is in turn linked to Les Arcs by the Vanoise Express cable car, forming Paradiski, so from this small village you can reach a vast amount of terrain. The Champagny side of La Plagne is known for sunny, south-facing slopes and long red runs with views over the Vanoise peaks and the Courchevel side of the valley.
Beginners usually head to the gentler areas of La Plagne, while intermediates have a huge playground. Experts can find steep terrain and off-piste across La Plagne and the glacier sector, ideally with a mountain guide. Depending on snow conditions, a home run leads back down to the village; when cover is thin, skiers descend by gondola, so check this locally.
The village is a particularly good choice for groups with mixed abilities. Strong skiers can head off across La Plagne, or even over to Les Arcs for a day, while beginners and children stay in the quieter areas nearby. Because the gondola station is at the edge of the village, getting to the slopes each morning is straightforward, and a lift back down at the end of the day means nobody has to tackle a tired last run if conditions are poor.
The village and Champagny le Haut
Champagny-en-Vanoise has kept the feel of a traditional Savoie farming village, with a baroque church, stone and wood houses, and relatively few large residences. It is much quieter than the purpose-built centres of La Plagne, which appeals to families and couples who prefer evenings in a real village. Further up, the valley of Champagny le Haut leads towards the Vanoise National Park and is a peaceful setting for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and winter walks.
Accommodation is mainly in chalets, apartments and small hotels. Because some properties are on steep lanes, sharing the exact address at booking helps your chauffeur choose the right drop-off point.
When to go and practical tips
The season usually runs from mid-December to April, with the higher altitudes of La Plagne providing reliable snow. January is calm, February is busy with school holidays, and March pairs good snow with sunshine on the south-facing slopes.
- Saturday traffic: the junction at Moûtiers is a well-known bottleneck; arriving on another day can save time.
- Snow chains: the road from Bozel can require them after heavy snow.
- Skis: declare all equipment so the vehicle has enough space.
- Ski passes: decide between a La Plagne pass and a full Paradiski pass depending on your ambitions.
Returning to Geneva Airport
For your departure, leave Champagny at least three and a half hours before your flight time, and allow extra on a Saturday or if snow is falling. The descent to Moûtiers and the expressway to Albertville can be slow on changeover days. Booking both directions together locks in your pick-up time and lets your chauffeur plan around traffic.
