La Plagne
La Plagne is about 190 km from Geneva Airport, a drive of around two and a half hours that crosses the border into France. Rather than a single resort, it is a group of ski villages spread over a large mountainside in the Tarentaise, linked with Les Arcs by the Vanoise Express cable car to form the Paradiski area. AirportsTransfers.ch takes you to the exact village you have booked, which matters here more than anywhere.

The route from Geneva Airport
After crossing into France, the route follows the motorway past Annecy to Albertville and then the dual carriageway up the Tarentaise valley. Depending on your village, you leave the valley at different points: the main high-altitude villages are reached via the road that climbs from Aime or from the Moûtiers side, Montchavin and Les Coches are reached from the Bellentre area further up the valley, and Champagny-en-Vanoise via Bozel. Each access road is a winding mountain climb, and winter tyres or chains are compulsory in snowy conditions. On Saturdays in high season, the valley roads around Albertville and Moûtiers can be very slow, so arriving early or midweek is a real advantage. Always give the exact village name when booking.
The ski area: Paradiski and the Bellecôte glacier
La Plagne's own ski area is vast and varied, with long, wide runs that make it a favourite with intermediates and families. Higher up, the slopes reach towards the Bellecôte glacier, with views of Mont Blanc on clear days. The Vanoise Express, a double-decker cable car spanning the valley between Montchavin-Les Coches and Peisey-Vallandry, links La Plagne with Les Arcs to form Paradiski, giving strong skiers almost limitless terrain. Off-piste opportunities are extensive, especially around the glacier and the north faces of Bellecôte, but should be tackled only with a qualified guide. La Plagne is also known for the bobsleigh track built for the 1992 Albertville Winter Olympics, which still offers rides to the public.
Choosing your village
The high-altitude villages, such as Plagne Centre, Aime 2000, Belle Plagne, Plagne Bellecôte, Plagne Villages, Plagne Soleil and Plagne 1800, were built for skiing, with many ski-in, ski-out apartments; some are functional in style, others built in a more chalet-like way. The lower villages, including Montchavin, Les Coches, Montalbert and Champagny-en-Vanoise, are set among trees and have a more traditional feel, with access to the main area by lifts. Families often appreciate the car-free centres of the high villages, while those who prefer a village atmosphere and wooded runs in bad weather may prefer the lower ones. Each village has its own shops and restaurants, though the choice varies.
When to go
The season generally runs from mid-December to late April, with the Bellecôte glacier area helping to extend the skiing. January is quiet and cold, February busy with French and European school holidays, and March and April offer long days and spring snow. Christmas and New Year are very popular, so transfers should be booked early. For snow-sure conditions early and late in the season, choose one of the higher villages.
Practical tips
Saturday is changeover day in the Tarentaise, and the roads can be congested from late morning to late afternoon in both directions. Plan your return to Geneva Airport with a generous margin. Pack goggles for flat light, as many slopes are above the tree line, and sun protection for bright days. Declare all skis and boards at booking and give your building name, as some villages are spread out. If you plan to explore Les Arcs, check the Vanoise Express status and last lifts before crossing.
- Choose a high village for snow-sure skiing, a lower one for charm.
- Check the last lifts back from Les Arcs.
- Leave early on Saturdays to avoid valley traffic.
