Le Corbier is a compact, ski-in, ski-out resort in the Maurienne and part of Les Sybelles. How to get there from Geneva Airport and make the most of it.

Le Corbier

Le Corbier is about 188 km from Geneva Airport, a drive of around two hours and twenty-five minutes that crosses the border into France. The resort sits high above the Maurienne valley and is one of the main bases of Les Sybelles, a large linked ski area shared with La Toussuire and several Arvan valley villages. Its accommodation is built right on the snow, so once AirportsTransfers.ch drops you at the door, you can leave the car-free life to begin.

  • Distance from GVA: about 188 km
  • Drive time: around 2 hours 25 minutes
  • Border crossing: yes, into France
  • Ski area: Les Sybelles, with La Toussuire, Saint-Sorlin-d'Arves and others
  • Best for: families with young children and practical ski-in, ski-out stays

The journey from Geneva Airport

After crossing into France, the route follows the motorway via Annecy towards Albertville or Chambéry and continues into the Maurienne valley. You leave the motorway at Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne and take the mountain road that climbs out of the valley towards the Arvan and Villards area, reaching Le Corbier after a long series of bends with views across the valley. The last part of the journey is a proper mountain road, and winter tyres or chains are compulsory when it snows. In normal traffic the trip takes about two and a half hours. The Maurienne is generally less congested than the Tarentaise on Saturdays, but the motorway around Annecy and Chambéry can still be busy at changeover.

A resort built for skiing

Le Corbier is a purpose-built resort from the era of large, functional ski stations, and its tall residential buildings are its signature. Love or hate the architecture, it is extremely practical: almost all apartments open more or less directly onto the slopes, shops and services are grouped together, and the snow front is free of traffic. For families with young children this is a real asset, as ski school meeting points, the nursery slopes and the apartment are only a few steps apart. Cars stay in car parks for the duration of the stay, and many visitors simply forget about them. When booking a transfer, give the name of your building, as the drop-off point differs by block.

The ski area: Les Sybelles

From Le Corbier you ski directly into Les Sybelles, one of the larger linked areas in France, which connects with La Toussuire, Saint-Jean-d'Arves, Saint-Sorlin-d'Arves, Saint-Colomban-des-Villards and Les Bottières. The slopes around Le Corbier are open and rolling, with many blue and red runs that suit families and intermediates. Stronger skiers can head further across the area for steeper terrain and off-piste after snowfall, preferably with a local guide. The jagged Aiguilles d'Arves dominate the views from the upper lifts. Because much of the area lies above the tree line, visibility can be poor during storms; on such days, stay close to the resort and the marked runs.

When to go

The season usually runs from mid-December to early April. January is excellent for quiet slopes and good value, while February is busy with French school holidays spread over several weeks. March brings long, sunny days, and the higher parts of Les Sybelles usually keep good snow. Christmas and New Year are very popular with families, so it is worth booking accommodation, ski school places and transfers early. Weekends outside the holidays are often calm, which makes Le Corbier a good choice for a short break.

Practical tips

Pack for a week of easy logistics: bring a small sledge for children, comfortable boots for walking around the snow front and sun protection for bright days. Ski hire, lift passes and lessons are easy to sort locally, but in high season it is wise to book in advance. On the journey, keep a bag with essentials easy to reach, as luggage may need to be carried from the drop-off point to the building. Declare all skis and boards when booking a transfer so the right vehicle is sent, and plan the return with a margin for Saturday traffic.

  • Choose a building close to the ski school if you have young children.
  • Check last-lift times when skiing far across Les Sybelles.
  • Keep a warm layer handy for the walk from the car to the door.
