Saint-Martin-de-Belleville
Saint-Martin-de-Belleville is about 184 km from Geneva Airport, a drive of a little over two hours that crosses the border into France. The village lies in the Belleville valley below Les Menuires and Val Thorens and offers direct lift access to Les 3 Vallées, combining an authentic Savoyard setting with one of the largest ski areas in the world. AirportsTransfers.ch drives you there directly, which spares you the longer climb to the higher resorts at the head of the valley.

- Border crossing: yes, into France
- Ski area: Les 3 Vallées, with easy links to Méribel and Les Menuires
- Best for: skiers who want big terrain and a traditional village
The route from Geneva Airport
The route crosses into France just after the airport and follows the motorway past Annecy to Albertville, then the dual carriageway up the Tarentaise valley to Moûtiers. In Moûtiers you turn off into the Belleville valley and follow the road upwards for a relatively short climb to Saint-Martin-de-Belleville, the first resort village of the valley. This is a real advantage over the resorts higher up: the mountain section is shorter and the journey time correspondingly lower. Winter tyres or chains are compulsory in snowy conditions, and on Saturdays in high season the Moûtiers bottleneck can add significant time, so plan your arrival carefully.
The ski area: straight into Les 3 Vallées
From the village, lifts climb up the mountainside to the ridge between the Belleville and Méribel valleys. From there you can ski down into Méribel, continue towards Courchevel, or head up the Belleville valley to Les Menuires and Val Thorens. The local slopes above Saint-Martin are partly wooded, which helps in poor visibility, and include long, rewarding runs back down to the village when snow cover allows. Beginners have gentle areas, but the real strength of the village is its access to an enormous range of terrain for intermediate and advanced skiers. Off-piste options across the 3 Vallées are extensive; hire a qualified guide if you want to explore them.
The village: stone, wood and a baroque chapel
Saint-Martin-de-Belleville has kept the character of a Savoyard mountain village, with stone and wood chalets, narrow lanes and a church at its centre. Just outside the village, the baroque chapel of Notre-Dame-de-la-Vie stands in the fields and is a well-known landmark of the valley. Accommodation is mainly in chalets and apartments, with a few hotels, and the atmosphere is calmer and more intimate than in the large purpose-built resorts. The village has restaurants, shops and ski hire for daily needs, and evenings are relaxed rather than loud.
When to go
The 3 Vallées season generally runs from December to April. Because the village itself is lower than Les Menuires and Val Thorens, the run home is at its best in midwinter; later in the season, you may need to take the lift down at the end of the day. January offers quiet slopes and cold, clear days, February is busy with school holidays, and March brings long sunny days that are perfect for exploring the whole area. Christmas and New Year are popular, and transfers should be booked early.
Practical tips
Saturdays are the main changeover day in the Tarentaise, and the roads around Albertville and Moûtiers can be very slow from late morning to late afternoon. If your dates allow, arrive or leave on another day, or set off early. When skiing far across the 3 Vallées, keep an eye on last-lift times so you can get back over the ridge. Pack goggles for flat light and good sun protection. Declare skis and boards at booking, and give your chalet's exact location, as some are on the steep lanes above the village centre.
- Ski to Méribel for lunch, but leave time for the return.
- Check snow cover on the home run later in the season.
- Allow a margin on the way back to Geneva Airport on Saturdays.
