Méribel
Méribel is 145 km from Geneva Airport, about 2 h 10 by road, in the French Alps at the centre of Les 3 Vallées. It is a popular choice for families who want a big ski area with chalet-style charm, and AirportsTransfers.ch can drive you all the way to your chalet with child seats installed, avoiding coach transfers with tired children.
- Distance from GVA: 145 km by road
- Drive time: around 2 h 10, longer on winter Saturdays
- Border crossing: the route crosses the border into France
- Family appeal: chalet village, gentle areas and access to Les 3 Vallées
- Watch out for: Saturday traffic in the Tarentaise valley
Getting there with children
From Geneva, the route enters France and follows motorways past Annecy towards Albertville, then up the Tarentaise valley to Moûtiers. From Moûtiers, a winding road climbs through the Méribel valley to the resort. With children, the mountain section can be the hardest part, so a stop before Moûtiers is often a good idea, particularly for anyone prone to car sickness.
The Tarentaise valley is known for heavy traffic on winter Saturdays, when thousands of skiers arrive and leave at the same time. A private transfer cannot avoid the queues entirely, but it does allow flexible timing, so you can choose an early flight or travel on a Sunday to miss the worst. The chauffeur takes you directly to your chalet door, which is a big help with luggage and sleepy children.
Why Méribel suits families
Méribel was developed in the late 1930s by a Scottish founder who insisted on traditional wooden chalet architecture, and the resort still has a warm, village feel, with a strong English-speaking presence. It sits in the centre of Les 3 Vallées, with access to Courchevel and Val Thorens, but families do not need to venture far: the slopes immediately around Méribel and Méribel-Mottaret include plenty of easy runs.
The Altiport area, above Méribel village, is a quiet, forested plateau with gentle slopes and cross-country trails, ideal for beginners and young children. Mottaret, higher up the valley, offers ski-in, ski-out accommodation and quick access to the wider area, which suits families with older, more confident children. Check how close your accommodation is to the lifts or the free resort buses.
Ski schools and first lessons
Méribel has many ski schools, with lessons in English as well as French. Children can start in snow gardens with magic carpets and progress to group lessons on the easy slopes. Booking ahead is important, especially for February half-term, when the resort is at its busiest with British families.
For very young children, there are childcare options with snow play and indoor activities. Families with mixed abilities can ski together on long blue runs, while stronger skiers explore further into Les 3 Vallées. Agree a meeting point and a mountain restaurant for lunch, so everyone can regroup easily in such a large area.
Beyond skiing: things to do with children
Méribel hosted ice hockey and women's alpine events at the 1992 Albertville Olympics, and its Olympic centre includes an ice rink and swimming pool, perfect for an afternoon off the slopes. There are sledging areas, snowshoe walks, dog sledding in the area and paragliding for older children. The Tueda nature reserve near Mottaret has forest walks around a frozen lake.
In the evening, the village centre has restaurants, cafés and shops. Many families stay in catered chalets, which makes evenings easy with children. The resort also offers family events during the holidays, and its compact centre makes it easy to stroll with young children.
Packing and planning the arrival day
Pack warm clothes, helmets, goggles, spare gloves and sun cream. Méribel has supermarkets and pharmacies, but bring specific medicines and baby items you rely on. Declare skis, snowboards and buggies at booking so the vehicle has enough space for luggage.
On arrival, keep the first afternoon light: hire equipment, find the lifts and meeting points for lessons, and have an early dinner. For your return, allow around three and a half hours before your flight, more on Saturdays, when the road from Moûtiers can be very slow.
