Getting there with children
The route follows the motorway from Geneva into France and up the Arve valley to Chamonix, then enters the Mont Blanc Tunnel, which runs for more than eleven kilometres under the massif. On the Italian side, Courmayeur is just a few minutes away. The total journey is about an hour and a half, short enough for most children without a stop, although the chauffeur can pause before the tunnel if needed.
The tunnel has strict safety rules, so there is no stopping inside, and traffic can occasionally be held at the entrance. Children usually enjoy the novelty of driving under Europe's highest mountain. Arriving in Italy in time for lunch is easy with a morning flight, which makes the first day more relaxed for everyone.
Why Courmayeur suits families
Courmayeur's ski area sits above the town, around Plan Checrouit and the Val Veny, and is reached by cable car from the centre or by gondola from Dolonne. The area is compact and easy to navigate, with a good mix of blue and red runs, including wooded slopes in the Val Veny that are sheltered on grey days. Children can progress quickly without parents worrying about getting lost in a huge domain.
The main point to plan for is the cable car: children will need to ride up in the morning and down at the end of the day, often carrying skis. Staying within walking distance of the lift station, or using the free local buses, makes life much easier. The town itself is small, pedestrian-friendly and full of cafés and gelaterie, which children appreciate.
Ski schools and first lessons
Several ski schools in Courmayeur offer lessons for children, from first-time skiers in dedicated beginner areas at Plan Checrouit to older children refining their technique. Instructors often speak English as well as Italian and French. As in other resorts, lessons should be booked in advance for school holiday weeks, particularly February.
For toddlers, look for kindergarten-style clubs where children can play in the snow and try small skis. The beginner areas are at mid-mountain, so parents can meet children for lunch at the mountain restaurants nearby, which serve generous Italian dishes, from pasta and polenta to pizza.
Beyond skiing: activities for children
The Skyway Monte Bianco cable car climbs to Punta Helbronner, with remarkable views over the Mont Blanc massif and the glaciers; it is high altitude, so check suitability for very young children. In the Val Ferret, cross-country trails, snowshoe walks and sledging take place in a peaceful, snow-covered valley. Courmayeur also has an ice rink and sports facilities.
The town's pedestrian Via Roma is lined with shops, bakeries and cafés, and evening strolls for hot chocolate become a family ritual. Because Chamonix is just through the tunnel, you can combine a day in France with your Italian holiday, or visit the Aosta valley's castles and the Roman town of Aosta.
Packing and arrival-day planning
Pack layers, helmets, gloves, goggles and sun cream; the light can be strong at altitude. Bring passports or identity cards for everyone, since the route crosses two borders. Supermarkets and pharmacies are available in Courmayeur, but bring any specific medicines with you. Declare skis and buggies when booking so the vehicle has enough luggage space.
On arrival day, keep things gentle: collect equipment, take the children for a walk in the town and have an early dinner. On departure, leave Courmayeur around three hours before your flight, more on Saturdays, when traffic at the tunnel and on the motorway towards Geneva can be heavy.
