Courmayeur
Courmayeur sits at the foot of Mont Blanc in Italy's Aosta Valley, yet it is only about 1 h 30 by road from Geneva Airport. That makes it one of the easiest Italian resorts to reach from Geneva, but it also raises two questions: can a car from Switzerland take you across the border, and what happens to the route when the Mont Blanc Tunnel is closed? This guide answers both.
Can a Swiss taxi or private car drive me to Courmayeur in Italy, and at what price?
Yes. We are a Geneva private chauffeur company and drive from Geneva Airport to Courmayeur, door to door to your hotel or chalet. Your chauffeur meets you in the arrivals hall with a name board, loads your luggage and skis and takes you to Italy without any change of vehicle.
The route across two borders
The usual route leaves Geneva on the motorway towards the Chamonix valley in France, then passes through the Mont Blanc Tunnel into Italy and down to Courmayeur, about 1 h 30 in normal conditions. You therefore cross from Switzerland into France and from France into Italy. Every passenger, including children, should carry a valid passport or identity card for the journey.
How the price is set
Rather than a metered fare, you get a fixed price per vehicle, shown instantly when you enter your Courmayeur address in the booking form, before payment. It is per vehicle, not per person, and it does not change with traffic, a slow tunnel crossing or a late flight.
| Metered fare | Our fixed price | |
|---|---|---|
| When you know the cost | At the end of the trip | Before you pay |
| Traffic and queues | Can increase the fare | No effect |
| Late flight | Waiting may be charged | Waiting included |
| Basis | Distance and time | Per vehicle, not per person |
What the transfer includes
- A private car reserved for your group, with no shared stops
- Flight tracking and meet and greet in the arrivals hall
- Waiting caused by a late flight
- Door-to-door drop-off at your Courmayeur address
- Winter tyres in the season, and skis carried when declared at booking
Which vehicle to choose
A Mercedes E-Class takes up to 3 passengers with 3 bags, and the S-Class offers a VIP option for 3 passengers with 2 bags. Families and groups with skis usually choose the Mercedes V-Class, for up to 7 passengers and 10 bags, while the Sprinter carries up to 16 people. Child seats and boosters are available on request.
Booking the return at the same time
Most guests book the arrival and the return to Geneva Airport together. The return is then confirmed by e-mail from the start, the vehicle chosen for the outward trip, with space for everyone's skis, is also planned for the way back, and you only need to tell us if your flight changes. If you prefer to wait, you can book the return separately online up to 12 hours before pick-up.
What happens to a Courmayeur to Geneva Airport transfer if the Mont Blanc Tunnel is closed?
The Mont Blanc Tunnel is the direct link between Courmayeur and Geneva, so any closure matters for your return. Most closures are planned well in advance, and even when the tunnel is shut there is another way back to Geneva.
Planned closures
The tunnel operator closes the tunnel from time to time for maintenance and safety work, usually overnight, and publishes the dates in advance. In autumn 2026, for example, a series of overnight closures, generally from 22:00 to 06:00, was announced, and delays are possible around the start and end of each closure. Schedules can change, so check the operator's information before your departure date, especially for an evening or early-morning flight.
Unplanned closures
The tunnel can also close at short notice, for example after an incident or in exceptional conditions. In that case the chauffeur follows the situation and takes the alternative route if needed. This is one more reason to leave a generous margin before an important flight.
The alternative route
When the Mont Blanc Tunnel is closed, the main alternative is to drive down the Aosta Valley to Aosta, then through the Great St Bernard Tunnel into Switzerland, down to Martigny and along Lake Geneva back to Geneva. The tunnel is open all year, while the road over the Great St Bernard Pass itself is closed by snow for much of the year, roughly from autumn to late spring. This route is clearly longer than the usual 1 h 30, so the pick-up time must be brought forward.
Leaving enough time for your flight
Even with the tunnel open, plan your pick-up generously. Start from the time you need at Geneva Airport for check-in, bag drop with skis and security, add the drive of about 1 h 30, then add a margin for winter weekends, snow and possible waiting at the tunnel. On Saturdays in the high season, when many skiers travel at the same time, that margin matters even more. If the alternative route via the Great St Bernard Tunnel is needed, the team will advise you on a suitable earlier pick-up time.
What to do before your return
- When booking, give your flight number and departure time so the pick-up can be planned correctly.
- A few days before, check whether a tunnel closure is announced for your travel time.
- If a closure affects your journey, contact the team by phone or WhatsApp on +41 78 346 56 77 or at contact@airportstransfers.ch with your booking number, so we can review the pick-up time and route with you.
- On the day, have luggage and skis ready at the door, as the chauffeur collects you at your hotel or chalet.
The team is reachable 24/7, so you can also call if the situation changes on the morning of your flight.
