Getting there: through France and under Mont Blanc
From Geneva Airport the route crosses into France and follows the A40 motorway towards Chamonix, the same road used by visitors heading to the French side of Mont Blanc. Just before Chamonix, the road branches off towards the Mont Blanc Tunnel, a long road tunnel running beneath the massif. On the other side you emerge in Italy, at the head of the Aosta Valley, and Courmayeur is only a few minutes further down the road.
Inside the tunnel, traffic is regulated with speed limits and safety distances, and there may be a short wait at the entrance at busy times. The tunnel is occasionally closed overnight or for maintenance periods; your chauffeur checks the status before departure and, if needed, uses the alternative route through Switzerland and the Great St Bernard tunnel, which takes longer.
The ski area on the Italian side of Mont Blanc
Courmayeur's main ski area is reached by cable car from the village up to Plan Checrouit, a sunny hub with mountain restaurants and lifts fanning out across the slopes. From the upper lifts, runs descend into the Val Veny, where the view across to the Italian face of Mont Blanc and its glaciers is one of the most striking in the Alps. The pistes are mostly intermediate, with a good mix of wide runs and tree-lined trails that hold up well in poor visibility.
For experienced skiers, the Skyway Monte Bianco cable car climbs from the outskirts of Courmayeur to Punta Helbronner, high on the Mont Blanc massif. From here, guided off-piste descents lead across glaciers, including the Italian approach to the Vallée Blanche. These routes are serious high-mountain terrain and should only be skied with a qualified mountain guide.
Courmayeur is not a vast ski area, and keen piste skiers may cover most of it within a few days. Many visitors combine it with a day in Chamonix or La Thuile, both within reach by road, which adds variety to a week.
The village and staying in Courmayeur
Courmayeur is an old Alpine village with a pedestrian main street, Via Roma, lined with cafés, shops and restaurants. The atmosphere is distinctly Italian: long lunches on the mountain, an evening walk through the centre and dinners built around Aosta Valley specialities such as fontina cheese, polenta and local wines. Many visitors say the food is as much a part of the holiday as the skiing.
Accommodation ranges from apartments and chalets in the village to hotels in Dolonne and Entrèves, small hamlets nearby. Dolonne has its own link to the ski area, and Entrèves is close to the Skyway station. Check how you will reach the main cable car each morning, as the village sits on a slope and luggage-free walks are much easier.
When to go and practical advice
The season usually runs from early December to April. January and early March are often good periods for quieter slopes, while February and the Italian holiday weeks are busier.
- Tunnel planning: allow a small margin for waiting at the tunnel entrance at peak times.
- Winter equipment: winter tyres or chains are required on Alpine roads on both sides of the tunnel in the cold season.
- Skis and luggage: declare skis at booking so the vehicle has enough space.
- Return trip: leave around two and a half to three hours before your flight from Geneva.
