Orelle
Orelle is about 185 km from Geneva Airport, a drive of around two hours that crosses the border into France. The village lies on the floor of the Maurienne valley, and a long gondola climbs from it to the slopes of Val Thorens, making Orelle a little-known back door into Les 3 Vallées. AirportsTransfers.ch takes you straight to the village or the gondola base, usually avoiding the Saturday queues of the Tarentaise.

- Best for: skiers who want 3 Vallées access with an easier drive
Getting to Orelle from Geneva Airport
The route enters France just after the airport and follows the motorway via Annecy towards Albertville or Chambéry, then turns into the Maurienne valley. The motorway runs up the valley towards the Fréjus tunnel and Italy, and Orelle lies close to it, near Saint-Michel-de-Maurienne. Unlike most 3 Vallées resorts, there is no long mountain climb at the end: the village is on the valley floor, and the steep part is done by gondola rather than by car. This makes the drive simpler and more predictable in winter, although winter tyres remain compulsory in snowy conditions on mountain roads. On Saturdays, the Maurienne is generally much less congested than the Tarentaise route via Moûtiers.
The ski area: from the valley to the top of the 3 Vallées
The Orelle gondola rises a long way from the valley floor to the high slopes of the Orelle sector, part of the Val Thorens ski area. From there you can ski over into Val Thorens and onwards across Les 3 Vallées to Les Menuires, Méribel and Courchevel. The terrain around the top of the gondola is high and open, with long runs and wide views, and it is often quieter than the slopes close to Val Thorens itself. Intermediate and advanced skiers will make the most of the access; beginners can manage, but should be aware that the easy slopes are higher up, not at the village. Off-piste here is high-mountain terrain; go with a qualified guide. Note that there is no ski run down to the valley, so the gondola is used in both directions.
The village and where to stay
Orelle is a small Maurienne village, not a ski resort in the usual sense. Accommodation is mainly in apartments, chalets and holiday residences around the gondola base or in nearby villages, and often costs less than staying at altitude in the 3 Vallées. The atmosphere is quiet and local, with a limited choice of shops and restaurants; Saint-Michel-de-Maurienne, a few minutes away, has more services. For many visitors the appeal is simple: a straightforward drive, a lower budget and direct access to a huge ski area. Valloire and Valmeinier, also in the Maurienne, are within reach by car if you want a change of scene.
When to go
The 3 Vallées season typically runs from December to April, and the high slopes reached by the Orelle gondola usually hold snow well throughout. January is quiet and cold, February busy with school holidays, and March and April offer long, sunny days and spring snow. Like any long lift, the gondola can be affected by strong wind, so check the lift status on stormy days and have a plan B. Christmas and New Year weeks book up early, as do transfers.
Practical tips
Plan your days around the gondola: be at the base in time for the morning lifts and keep an eye on the time for the last ride down, as missing it means a long and costly road trip round to the Maurienne. Pack good goggles and warm layers for the high slopes. If you have heavy luggage, choose accommodation within walking distance of the gondola or ask your transfer to drop you at the door. Declare skis and boards when booking, and if you are a large group, consider the van or minibus to travel together.
- Check the gondola timetable and wind closures daily.
- Plan longer tours across the 3 Vallées with a margin for the return.
- Travel on Saturday with less stress thanks to the Maurienne route.
