From Geneva Airport to Valmeinier
Leaving the airport, the route crosses into France and follows the motorway via Annecy towards Albertville or Chambéry, then turns into the Maurienne valley. You continue up the valley towards Saint-Michel-de-Maurienne, where you leave the motorway and take the mountain road that climbs to Valmeinier. The climb is winding, with views opening up over the valley and the surrounding peaks, and winter tyres or chains are compulsory when it snows. In normal traffic the trip takes a little over two hours. The Maurienne is generally less congested on Saturdays than the Tarentaise, which makes changeover day less stressful than in many other resorts.
The ski area: Galibier-Thabor
Valmeinier's slopes connect with those of Valloire, a larger village on the other side of the ridge, to form the Galibier-Thabor ski area. The terrain is varied, with many wide blue and red runs, some steeper descents and beautiful views towards Mont Thabor and the Galibier massif. Intermediates have plenty of variety for a week, and beginners will find gentle areas near the resort. Stronger skiers can explore the more demanding runs and, after snowfall, off-piste terrain, best done with a local guide. Skiing over to Valloire for lunch is a classic day out; check the last lifts back before you set off.
The resort: two levels, one atmosphere
Valmeinier is made up of two main parts. Valmeinier 1800, higher up, is the main ski base, with chalet-style apartment buildings and residences, many with easy access to the slopes. Valmeinier 1500, lower down, is the older village, with a more traditional atmosphere, a short way below the main base. The resort has the shops, restaurants and ski hire you need for a week, in a calm, family-friendly setting with little traffic. Non-skiers can enjoy snowshoeing, sledging and winter walks, and the views across the valley at sunset are lovely. Evenings are low-key, with a few bars and restaurants rather than a big nightlife scene, which suits families and groups of friends who want to cook together in a chalet. Ski schools operate in the resort, and in the holidays it is sensible to reserve lessons and equipment before you arrive.
When to go
The season usually runs from mid-December to early April. January offers quiet slopes and good conditions, while February is busy with French school holidays spread over several weeks. March brings long, sunny days, and the higher slopes of the area usually keep good snow. Christmas and New Year weeks book up early, and transfers should be reserved at the same time as accommodation. For a short break, Valmeinier's quieter weekends outside the holidays are worth considering.
Practical tips
Even though the Maurienne is quieter, the motorway around Annecy and Chambéry can be slow on Saturdays. Allow extra time for the return to Geneva Airport, especially after snowfall. Pack goggles, sun protection and warm layers, as the weather can change quickly. Self-caterers may want to stock up in the valley on the way, as the resort shops are smaller. Give your exact address and level, 1800 or 1500, when booking a transfer, and declare skis and boards so the right vehicle is sent.
- Ski to Valloire for a change of scene and lunch.
- Choose 1800 for direct access, 1500 for a village feel.
- Check the weather before long tours across the area.
