Modane

Modane is 195 km from Geneva Airport, about 2 h 05 by road, and the route crosses the border into France before climbing the length of the Maurienne valley. The town sits at the French end of the Fréjus road and rail tunnels to Italy, on the edge of the Vanoise National Park and close to the ski areas of the Haute-Maurienne. AirportsTransfers.ch can take you there directly, or on to Valfréjus, La Norma, Aussois or Val Cenis.

  • Distance from GVA: 195 km by road
  • Drive time: about 2 h 05
  • Border crossing: yes, into France; Italy is just beyond via the Fréjus tunnel
  • Best for: mountain sports, forts and history, access to the Vanoise
  • Getting there: A41 to Chambéry, then the A43 up the Maurienne

The road from Geneva Airport

Leaving Geneva, the route enters France and follows the A41 past Annecy to Chambéry, where it joins the A43. This motorway runs the full length of the Maurienne valley, following the Arc river past Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne and Saint-Michel-de-Maurienne, and ends just above Modane at the entrance to the Fréjus road tunnel. The A43 is the main road link between France and northern Italy in this part of the Alps, so it carries a lot of freight, but it is wide and well maintained, and the journey time is usually predictable.

Winter conditions are the main concern: the upper valley receives plenty of snow, and mountain rules require winter tyres or chains. Onward roads to resorts are steeper and narrower, so arriving in a vehicle prepared for Alpine driving is important.

A town shaped by its tunnels

Modane's history is tied to transport. The Fréjus rail tunnel, opened in the nineteenth century, was one of the first great Alpine rail tunnels and transformed the town into a frontier station between France and Italy. The road tunnel followed in the twentieth century. Modane remains a border station for international trains, and its streets reflect that role, with railway buildings, customs offices and the practical services of a crossing point. It is a working mountain town rather than a resort, which gives it a down-to-earth character.

For travellers, the proximity to Italy is a real asset: Bardonecchia and the Susa valley lie on the other side of the tunnel, and Turin is within reach for a long day trip.

The Esseillon forts and the Vanoise

Just above Modane, on the road towards Aussois, a remarkable chain of nineteenth-century forts known as the Barrière de l'Esseillon stands on rocky ledges above the Arc gorge. Built by the Kingdom of Sardinia to guard the route into Piedmont, the five forts are linked by footpaths, bridges and, for the adventurous, via ferrata routes. Some host exhibitions and cultural events in summer.

The Vanoise National Park, the oldest national park in France, begins on the slopes above the valley. Its high pastures, glaciers and lakes are home to ibex, chamois and marmots, and marked trails start from villages close to Modane, ranging from easy walks to multi-day treks between mountain refuges.

Skiing and day trips

Several ski areas lie within a short drive of Modane, each with its own character. Valfréjus is directly above the town, La Norma is a car-free village resort, Aussois sits on a sunny plateau near the Esseillon forts, and Val Cenis further up the valley offers long runs and access to the Mont Cenis pass in summer.

  • The Esseillon forts and their via ferrata
  • Aussois, La Norma and Valfréjus ski areas
  • Bessans and Bonneval-sur-Arc, traditional villages of the Haute-Maurienne
  • Bardonecchia in Italy, through the Fréjus tunnel

Practical tips

Carry a passport or ID card, as you cross into France on the way and Italy is only a tunnel away. In winter, pack warm, waterproof clothing and plan for snow; in summer, bring walking boots for the Vanoise trails. Accommodation in Modane itself is modest and practical, and many visitors prefer to stay in the surrounding villages and resorts. For skiers, a van with space for equipment makes the final leg to the resort much easier than a change of transport at the station.
