Thun
Thun is 187 km from Geneva Airport, about two hours by road, with no border to cross. The town stands where the Aare flows out of Lake Thun, overlooked by a castle with four corner turrets and backed by the snow peaks of the Bernese Oberland. AirportsTransfers.ch offers a direct transfer from Geneva arrivals to Thun or to anywhere along the lake.
- Distance from GVA: 187 km by road
- Drive time: about 2 hours
- Border crossing: none
- Best for: lake and mountain scenery, castles, a calm base for the Oberland
- Getting there: A1 and A12 via Lausanne and Fribourg, then the A6 from Bern
The drive from Geneva Airport
The route runs along the A1 to Lausanne, then inland on the A12 past Fribourg to Bern, where it joins the A6 motorway heading south-east to Thun. The last part follows the Aare valley, and on a clear day the peaks of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau appear on the horizon long before you reach the lake. The whole journey is on motorways and is reliable in all seasons, with occasional slowdowns around Lausanne and the Bern ring road at rush hour.
Because Thun is the gateway to the Bernese Oberland, traffic heading for Interlaken and the mountain resorts can be heavy on summer and winter weekends, so a little extra time is worth planning on those days.
The castle and the old town
Thun Castle, built by the Dukes of Zähringen in the twelfth century, crowns a hill above the old town. Its keep with four corner towers is one of the most recognisable silhouettes in Switzerland, and inside, a history museum occupies the great hall and upper floors, with sweeping views over the lake and the Alps from the top. A covered wooden staircase climbs to it from the main street.
The old town below is distinctive for its Obere Hauptgasse, a main street with raised walkways on two levels: shops on the upper level stand above the roofs of the ground-floor arcades, creating a pedestrian terrace unlike any other in the country. The Aare runs fast through the centre, crossed by covered wooden sluice bridges, and in summer people swim and float in the river. The Mühleplatz, beside the water, is the liveliest spot for cafés in the evening.
Thun also has a long tradition of craftsmanship and markets: a weekly market fills the old town streets, and the town is known in Switzerland for its colourful Thun majolica pottery, produced in the region since the nineteenth century and still collected today. The Kunstmuseum Thun, near the lake, shows Swiss and international art in changing exhibitions, and the town's compact size means that castle, river and lakeside can all be seen comfortably in a single day.
Life on Lake Thun
Lake Thun stretches south-east towards Interlaken, framed by steep wooded shores and high peaks. Lake steamers and motor ships leave from near the station and call at villages along both shores, making a cruise one of the easiest ways to enjoy the scenery. On the edge of town, the Schadau park and its neo-Gothic castle sit right on the water and are ideal for a lakeside stroll. Further along the north shore, Oberhofen Castle, with its tower standing in the lake, has gardens and period rooms open to visitors, and the nearby St Beatus caves can be explored on guided routes.
- A lake cruise to Spiez, Oberhofen or Interlaken
- The Niesen, the pyramid-shaped mountain above the lake, by funicular
- Interlaken and the Jungfrau region
- Bern, the federal city, about twenty minutes by motorway
Where to stay and practical tips
Hotels in the old town and along the river put you close to restaurants and the castle, while lakeside hotels in Hilterfingen, Oberhofen or around Schadau offer quieter surroundings and views across the water. Thun is also home to a large military base and some industry, and business visitors often combine it with meetings in Bern. Summer is the season for swimming, boating and terraces; winter brings fewer visitors but clear views of the snow-covered peaks and easy access to the Oberland ski areas. If you plan several excursions, a chauffeur by the hour, minimum two hours, is a flexible alternative to trains and boats.
