Spiez
Spiez is 199 km from Geneva Airport, about 2 h 05 by road, with no border crossing. The town curves around a small bay on the south shore of Lake Thun, where a medieval castle and an early Romanesque church stand on a promontory above the harbour and vineyards climb the slope behind. AirportsTransfers.ch drives you from Geneva arrivals straight to your hotel, or onward to Kandersteg, Adelboden or Interlaken.
- Distance from GVA: 199 km by road

- Border crossing: none
- Best for: lakeside stays, wine and walks, a hub for Oberland valleys
- Getting there: motorway via Lausanne, Bern and Thun
From Geneva Airport to Spiez
The usual route follows the A1 to Lausanne, then the A12 through the Fribourg countryside to Bern, and the A6 south-east past Thun. The motorway continues along the south side of Lake Thun to the Spiez exit, with views across the water to the Niesen and the high peaks behind. It is motorway almost all the way, and the drive is dependable year round.
Spiez is a natural junction: from here roads lead up the Kander valley towards Frutigen, Kandersteg and Adelboden, and west into the Simmental towards Zweisimmen and Gstaad, while the motorway continues to Interlaken. Weekends in the ski season and summer holidays bring extra traffic on these routes, so allow a margin on Saturdays.
The castle and the bay
The image that defines Spiez is the view of its bay: the castle with its tall keep, the small church beside it and the boats in the harbour, all framed by vineyards and the lake. Spiez Castle was the seat of noble families for centuries and now houses a museum with period rooms, a tower with views over the lake and a garden that hosts concerts and events in summer. The castle church, a simple Romanesque building, is one of the oldest in the region.
A lakeside promenade leads around the bay, and the vineyards above the town produce wines that are an unusual sight in the Bernese Oberland. A signposted wine trail climbs through the vines to viewpoints over the lake, making a short and pleasant walk.
The bay is also one of the few places on Lake Thun with a sheltered harbour and a lakeside bathing area close to the centre, and in warm weather the water is popular for swimming, paddling and sailing. In the evening, the terraces around the harbour catch the last light on the mountains opposite, which is one of the quiet pleasures of staying here rather than in a busier resort.
A crossroads of lake, rail and mountains
Spiez is a hub for the railways of the region. The Lötschberg line heads south from here through the Kander valley and under the Bernese Alps into Valais, while other lines run west into the Simmental and east to Interlaken. Lake steamers also call at the harbour, linking Spiez with Thun and Interlaken by water. For visitors, this makes the town an efficient base: many of the classic sights of the Bernese Oberland are within an hour, and you can return each evening to a quiet lakeside hotel.
Day trips from Spiez
Across the bay rises the Niesen, a nearly perfect pyramid of a mountain reached by a historic funicular from Mülenen, a few minutes south of Spiez. From its summit the view takes in Lake Thun, Lake Brienz and the great peaks of the Jungfrau region. Further up the Kander valley, Kandersteg is the starting point for a short gondola ride and walk to the Oeschinensee, a mountain lake beneath sheer cliffs, one of the most photographed sights in Switzerland.
- The Niesen by funicular from Mülenen
- Kandersteg and the Oeschinensee
- The Blausee, a small, clear blue lake in the Kander valley
- Interlaken, Grindelwald and the Jungfrau region
Where to stay and practical tips
Hotels around the bay and on the slopes above enjoy lake views, while those near the station are convenient for rail day trips. Spiez is quieter than Interlaken, which suits families and travellers looking for calm evenings. Summer is the season for boat trips, swimming and walking; in winter, the lake is peaceful and the ski areas of Adelboden, Lenk and the Jungfrau region are within easy reach. If you plan to visit several valleys in a day, a chauffeur by the hour, minimum two hours, offers flexibility the timetables cannot.
