Getting to Lauterbrunnen from Geneva Airport
The motorway heads from Lake Geneva across the Swiss plateau to Bern, then down to Thun and along Lake Thun to Interlaken. From there a valley road climbs gently beside the Lütschine river, and after a few kilometres the rock walls close in and Lauterbrunnen appears, its church and chalets set against a backdrop of cliffs.
The train journey from Geneva normally includes at least two changes, in Bern or Spiez and then in Interlaken Ost, before the final regional line up the valley. With suitcases, skis or children, a private transfer means only one step: from the arrivals hall to the door. If you are staying in Wengen or Mürren, your chauffeur will drop you at the right departure point and help you unload.
The last part of the trip, beyond Interlaken, is short but dramatic: in a few minutes the open lake landscape gives way to a narrow valley where the cliffs rise almost vertically on both sides. Many first-time visitors ask the chauffeur to slow down simply to take in the view of the first waterfalls.
The valley of waterfalls
Lauterbrunnen is often described as the valley of 72 waterfalls, and on arrival it is easy to see why. The most famous, the Staubbach Falls, plunges from the cliff top just behind the village, the water turning to spray before it reaches the ground. A path leads to a gallery behind the falls for a closer view.
Further up the valley, the Trümmelbach Falls are quite different: meltwater from the glaciers of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau thunders through a series of gorges carved inside the mountain. A lift and illuminated walkways let visitors see the falls from within, a powerful experience on a warm day when the flow is high. The valley's landscape is often said to have inspired the hidden valley of Rivendell in Tolkien's writing.
Wengen, Mürren and the high peaks
Lauterbrunnen is the gateway to two car-free villages perched on terraces above the valley. Wengen is reached by a cog railway from Lauterbrunnen station, and continues to Kleine Scheidegg at the foot of the Eiger north face, where the railway to the Jungfraujoch starts. On the other side of the valley, Mürren is reached by a cable car to Grütschalp and a short train ride, or from Stechelberg at the end of the valley by cable car via Gimmelwald.
Above Mürren, the Schilthorn summit with its revolving restaurant, famous as a James Bond film location, offers a panorama of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. In winter both villages are part of the Jungfrau ski region; in summer, trails such as the walk from Grütschalp to Mürren offer some of the most photographed views in Switzerland.
Where to stay
Lauterbrunnen itself offers hotels, guesthouses, holiday apartments and campsites along the valley floor, and it suits people who want flexibility to explore both sides of the valley. Wengen and Mürren offer a more secluded, traffic-free atmosphere; Gimmelwald is a tiny farming hamlet favoured by those looking for peace. When booking a transfer to a car-free village, give us the name of your accommodation so that the drop-off point and luggage arrangements can be planned. Large car parks near Lauterbrunnen station serve visitors who arrive by road.
Practical tips
- Waterfalls are at their most spectacular in late spring and early summer when the snow melts.
- The valley floor gets limited sun in winter, so it can feel cold even on clear days.
- Check the weather before going up to the summits; cloud can hide the peaks entirely.
- Luggage can be sent ahead to some car-free resorts through the railway; ask your hotel.
