Mürren

Mürren is about 240 km from Geneva Airport, a drive of around three hours via Bern, Thun and Interlaken to the Lauterbrunnen valley, followed by a cable car and short mountain railway, or a cable car via Gimmelwald, up to the car-free village. Mürren faces the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau and is the base for skiing on the Schilthorn. AirportsTransfers.ch takes you from arrivals to the valley station at a fixed price per vehicle.

  • Distance from GVA: about 240 km to the Lauterbrunnen valley
  • Drive time: around 3 h
  • Border crossing: none, the route stays in Switzerland
  • Getting up: cable car from Lauterbrunnen or Stechelberg to car-free Mürren
  • Suits: skiers who love views, steep runs and a traditional village

Getting there from Geneva Airport

The route follows the A1 along Lake Geneva to Lausanne, the A12 across the Fribourg countryside to Bern, then the A6 to Thun and the A8 along Lake Thun to Interlaken. From Interlaken a valley road climbs gently into the narrow, cliff-lined Lauterbrunnen valley, famous for its waterfalls.

Cars cannot reach Mürren. There are two ways up. From Lauterbrunnen village, a cable car climbs to Grütschalp, where a small train runs along the cliff edge to Mürren. Alternatively, drive to the head of the valley at Stechelberg and take the Schilthorn cable car via Gimmelwald to Mürren. Your chauffeur drops you at whichever valley station suits your accommodation, and lifts carry skis and luggage.

The ski area

Mürren's skiing is on the slopes of the Schilthorn, whose summit station houses Piz Gloria, the revolving restaurant made famous by the 1969 James Bond film On Her Majesty's Secret Service. From the top, long and often steep runs descend towards Mürren, with views of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau across the valley. The village is also known for the Inferno, a long-established amateur race from the Schilthorn towards the valley.

The area is smaller than the linked network of Wengen and Grindelwald across the valley, but it has more character than its size suggests: steep upper slopes for experts, rolling intermediate runs around Allmendhubel and Winteregg, and gentle nursery areas. The Jungfrau region pass covers both sides of the valley, so a day trip to Wengen or Grindelwald by train is easy.

The car-free village

Mürren sits on a sunny terrace on the edge of a cliff high above the Lauterbrunnen valley, with old wooden chalets and hotels lined up along a single main street. With no cars, it is quiet and atmospheric, especially in the evening when the lights of Wengen glow on the opposite side of the valley.

Many British skiers have a long attachment to Mürren, which played a part in the early history of alpine ski racing. Today the village combines that tradition with a relaxed, unhurried pace that suits couples and families with older children who enjoy the scenery as much as the skiing.

When to go

The season generally runs from mid-December to early April. January is often bright and cold with excellent views, while February brings school holidays and busier slopes. March offers long days and good spring snow on the upper runs, though the lower slopes towards Winteregg can soften in the afternoon.

The Schilthorn's upper lifts are exposed to wind; if they close, the lower runs and the Jungfrau region across the valley offer alternatives.

Non-skiers are well catered for: winter walking paths lead along the terrace towards Gimmelwald, sledging is popular on the lower slopes, and the trip to the Schilthorn summit is worthwhile on a clear day even without skis, simply for the panorama of the Bernese Alps.

Practical tips

The road via Bern and Interlaken is usually free-flowing, but avoid peak commuting hours around Lausanne and Bern if you can. Pack in bags you can carry easily, as the final stage is by cable car and train. Some hotels in Mürren offer luggage collection from the station; ask before you arrive.

Check the timing of the last cable car if you land late, and inform your chauffeur so that the drive is planned with a comfortable margin. For the return, allow around four hours from Mürren to Geneva Airport, including the descent to the valley.

Reserve your transfer

AirportsTransfers.ch gives you a fixed price per vehicle before you pay, with secure online payment by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. Your chauffeur meets you in the arrivals hall holding a name sign, tracks your flight and waits if you are delayed, with waiting included. The Mercedes E-Class is suited to three passengers and three bags, the V-Class to families of up to seven with skis, and the Sprinter to groups.
