Bonneval-sur-Arc
Bonneval-sur-Arc is about 238 km from Geneva Airport, a drive of roughly 2 h 45 min down the motorway to the Maurienne valley and then up through Val Cenis and Bessans to the head of the Haute Maurienne. It is a small, high-altitude ski area beside one of the most carefully preserved stone villages in the French Alps. AirportsTransfers.ch drives you there privately from arrivals at a fixed price per vehicle.

Getting there from Geneva Airport
From the airport you cross into France within minutes and take the A41 south past Annecy to Chambéry, then the A43 east into the Maurienne valley. The motorway follows the river Arc upstream through Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne to Modane, where most traffic carries on towards the Fréjus Tunnel and Italy.
You leave the motorway before the tunnel and continue on the valley road to Val Cenis, then on through Bessans to Bonneval-sur-Arc. In winter Bonneval is the end of the line: the road beyond, over the Col de l'Iseran towards Val d'Isère, is closed by snow. The last stretch after Val Cenis is a high, open valley that can be windy and snowy, so winter tyres and chains are essential, and a chauffeur used to alpine roads makes a real difference after dark.
The ski area
Bonneval's lifts climb from just above the village towards the glaciers at the source of the Arc. The area is small by the standards of the big Tarentaise resorts, but its altitude and north-easterly orientation help it hold snow well, often from early in the season into spring. The pistes are mainly red and blue, with wide open slopes, few crowds and short lift queues even in February.
What draws many regulars is the surrounding terrain. The Vanoise National Park and the high frontier ridges offer serious off-piste and ski touring, from short climbs above the lifts to multi-day trips. That terrain should be explored with a qualified mountain guide. Beginners can learn here on quiet slopes, but those wanting a large network of linked runs will find more choice in Val Cenis, a short drive down the valley.
A stone village at the end of the valley
The old village of Bonneval-sur-Arc is listed among the Plus Beaux Villages de France. Its houses are built of rough stone with heavy slab roofs, crowded together against the wind and cold, and modern additions are kept to a minimum. Overhead power lines and modern signage are kept discreet, which helps the village keep its traditional look in the snow.
Accommodation is mostly in small hotels, guesthouses, gîtes and apartments, both in the old village and the hamlet of L'Écot higher up, which is reached on foot or by snowshoe in winter. Bessans, the next village down, is known for its cross-country skiing trails and its own traditions.
When to go
The season generally runs from December to April, and the high altitude means Bonneval is a good bet in years when lower resorts struggle. January is cold, crisp and very quiet. French school holidays in February bring more families, though the resort never approaches the crowds of larger stations. March and April are prized for touring, with longer days and more settled snowpacks.
Be ready for real cold in mid-winter: this is a high valley where temperatures can drop sharply at night.
Practical tips
Saturdays during French school holidays bring heavy traffic on the A43, especially in the morning, and slow-moving queues near the motorway exits for the Maurienne resorts. Leaving Geneva early, or arriving midweek, saves time. Bring euros as well as cards: Bonneval is small and some places prefer cash.
Pack warm layers, a buff and good gloves, and avalanche equipment if you plan to go off-piste. Allow at least three and a half hours for the return to Geneva Airport, and more after heavy snow on the upper valley road.
