Claviere

Claviere is about 237 km from Geneva Airport, a drive of roughly 2 h 45 min through the Fréjus Tunnel into Italy and up the valley beyond Oulx and Cesana. Sitting right on the French-Italian frontier, it is a small, friendly village with lifts linking directly to Montgenèvre in France and to the rest of the Via Lattea. AirportsTransfers.ch can drive you straight there from arrivals at a fixed price per vehicle.

  • Distance from GVA: about 237 km
  • Drive time: around 2 h 45 min
  • Border crossing: into France, then into Italy via the Fréjus Tunnel
  • Ski area: Via Lattea, linked to Montgenèvre and Cesana-Sansicario
  • Suits: families, intermediates and skiers who like a small village

Route from Geneva Airport

The journey follows the A41 south through Haute-Savoie towards Chambéry, then the A43 east into the Maurienne valley as far as Modane. The Fréjus road tunnel brings you out in Italy at Bardonecchia, and the motorway descends quickly to Oulx.

From Oulx the main road climbs the upper Susa valley through Cesana Torinese, then up a series of bends to Claviere, the last village before the French border at Montgenèvre. Because Claviere is high and exposed to weather coming over the pass, the road can be snowy when the valley is clear, so the final half hour may take longer in mid-winter. A professional vehicle carries chains and winter tyres as standard.

The ski area

Claviere has its own lifts on both sides of the village, and the pistes link westwards across the border with Montgenèvre and eastwards towards Cesana and Sansicario. This places it on the main axis of the Via Lattea, a large ski area that also includes Sestriere and Sauze d'Oulx. With the international lift pass you can ski into France and back in the same morning.

The local slopes are mostly gentle to intermediate, with open runs above the tree line and wooded pistes lower down. That makes Claviere a comfortable base for families and those still building confidence, while stronger skiers can head off towards the longer and steeper runs in other parts of the circuit. Off-piste options exist around the border ridges; take a guide if you plan to venture off the marked runs.

A village on the frontier

Claviere is a compact village strung along the old road over the Montgenèvre pass, with a parish church, shops and restaurants all within a few minutes' walk. Its position on the border gives it a mixed character: you hear French and Italian on the slopes, and the French resort of Montgenèvre is just a short drive or ski away.

It is quieter than Sauze d'Oulx or Sestriere in the evening, which suits families and couples. Just below the village, a deep rocky gorge is crossed by a long suspended footbridge, a popular outing in the warmer months. In winter, snowshoe and walking paths lead into the surrounding forests.

When to go

The season usually runs from December to early April. Claviere's position near the pass means it often benefits from storms arriving from the south and west, which can bring heavy snowfalls. January is calm and good value; February sees school holidays from Italy, France and other countries, and weekends bring visitors from Turin.

March is a pleasant month for exploring the whole Via Lattea, with long days and plenty of sunshine on the southern slopes.

Practical tips

Saturday is the busiest day on the A43 and at the Fréjus Tunnel. If you can, aim to arrive in the evening or midweek. Have euros or a card for small purchases. Because the village is small, accommodation is usually easy to find, but give the full address so your chauffeur can drop you as close as possible to the door.

Skis and boots for a family take up a lot of room, so a van is often the sensible choice. For the return journey, allow at least three and a half hours to Geneva Airport, and more after heavy snow.

If you plan to ski over to Montgenèvre regularly, check that your lift pass covers the international Via Lattea area rather than only the Italian side. Remember that the two countries share the slopes but not always the same mobile tariffs, so it is worth checking your roaming settings before your first day on the French side.
