Belalp
Belalp is about 229 km from Geneva Airport, roughly 3 h 10 min by road along Lake Geneva and the Rhône valley to Brig, Naters and the valley station at Blatten. From there a cable car carries you up to the car-free terrace of Belalp, high above the Aletsch Glacier. AirportsTransfers.ch takes you from arrivals to the Blatten cable car at a fixed price per vehicle.

Getting there from Geneva Airport
The drive follows the A1 along Lake Geneva past Lausanne and the vineyards of Lavaux, then the A9 into the Rhône valley via Montreux, Martigny and Sion. Beyond Sierre the valley narrows and the motorway gives way to the main road in places as you continue to Visp and Brig. At Naters, on the opposite bank of the Rhône from Brig, a road climbs in hairpins to the hamlet of Blatten.
Blatten is the end of the road. Cars stay in the car park, and the cable car takes passengers and luggage up to Belalp. Your chauffeur drops you at the valley station, where the lift operation handles the onward journey; check with your accommodation whether they collect luggage at the top station. The climb from Naters to Blatten is short but steep, so winter equipment matters after snowfall.
The ski area
Belalp's slopes lie on a broad, sunny terrace facing south-east on the edge of the Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch UNESCO World Heritage region. The lifts climb to a ridge with views across the Aletsch Glacier, the longest glacier in the Alps, and a long run descends all the way from the top to Blatten when snow is sufficient.
The ski area is compact and rarely crowded. Most pistes are red and blue, with open, rolling terrain that suits confident intermediates, and there is off-piste around the ridges for those with a guide. Beginners have dedicated areas near the hamlet. The character here is about space and scenery rather than lift-hopping: few resorts give such a direct view over a glacier of this size.
The car-free hamlet
Belalp itself is a scattering of chalets, a few hotels and mountain restaurants spread over the slope rather than a village with a main street. There is no road traffic, which makes the evenings very quiet and the days safe for children walking to the lifts. Many guests stay in Blatten instead, a pretty hamlet with old larch buildings and a chapel, and ride the cable car up each morning.
Brig, a short drive below, has the Stockalper Palace and a compact old town, and is a convenient base for a mixed holiday combining Belalp with other resorts of the Upper Valais.
When to go
The season generally runs from mid-December to early April. The sunny exposure makes Belalp pleasant in January, when many north-facing resorts are cold and shaded. February brings Swiss and international school holidays, but the resort remains relatively calm compared with larger names in Valais. In spring the lower runs to Blatten can close earlier than the upper slopes.
Whatever the month, the terrace catches the sun for much of the day, so good sunglasses, sun cream and a light layer for the afternoon are as important as a warm jacket for the cable car ride in the morning.
Practical tips
Since the final stage is by cable car, pack in bags that you can carry easily rather than very large hard cases. Skis are fine on the lift, and so are boot bags. If you arrive late, check the last cable car of the day in advance with your accommodation, and let your chauffeur know so the timing can be planned with a margin.
Saturday traffic in the Rhône valley is normally manageable compared with the French Alps, but the motorway around Lausanne and Montreux can slow at peak hours. On the way home, allow around four hours from Belalp to Geneva Airport, including the cable car down and a buffer for snow.
