The journey from Geneva Airport to Bettmeralp
From the airport the motorway follows Lake Geneva past Lausanne and Montreux, then the Rhône valley via Martigny, Sion and Visp to Brig. A few kilometres beyond Brig, in the direction of the Goms valley, you reach Betten Talstation, the valley station of the Bettmeralp cable car, just past the Riederalp lift at Mörel.
Bettmeralp is car-free, so the road part ends at the valley station. Your chauffeur unloads your bags and skis there, and the cable car takes you up to the village, where electric taxis or luggage services usually handle heavier items. The motorway is straightforward, but snow can slow the last section past Brig. Travelling by train and regional connections is possible, though it means handling luggage several times.
Skiing in the Aletsch Arena from Bettmeralp
Bettmeralp is the central village of the Aletsch Arena, a ski area that stretches along a high, sunny terrace between Riederalp and Fiesch-Eggishorn. From Bettmeralp, lifts lead up to the Bettmerhorn, from where you look over the Great Aletsch Glacier, and pistes link east and west across the arena.
The terrain suits intermediates and families particularly well, with many blue and red runs and long, scenic descents. The Bettmerhorn and Eggishorn sectors include steeper runs for more experienced skiers, and fresh snow brings off-piste opportunities, for which a guide is essential. Beginners have gentle slopes within the village itself, which keeps the first days of a ski holiday simple.
A car-free village with a lakeside chapel
Bettmeralp is a compact village of wooden chalets set on the sunny terrace, with views over the Rhône valley to the peaks of the Valais Alps. Without cars, children can walk to ski school and adults can stroll in the evenings in peace. The village has a range of restaurants, a few shops and a calm atmosphere.
Close to the village lies the small Bettmersee lake, with a picturesque chapel on its shore, a much-photographed spot in winter and summer alike. From the Bettmerhorn, a viewing area and visitor information explain the glacier, which belongs to the Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch UNESCO World Heritage Site. Winter walking paths and snowshoe routes along the terrace give non-skiers the same views as skiers.
When to go and practical tips
The season usually runs from December to April. The terrace enjoys plenty of sun and its altitude gives reliable snow. February is the busiest month with school holidays; January and March are generally calmer.
- Travel light where possible: luggage goes by cable car and then through the village.
- Ask your accommodation how luggage is handled from the top station.
- Declare skis and snowboards when booking so the vehicle has room.
- Pack sun protection: the terrace and glacier views mean bright days.
Bettmeralp and Riederalp share the same ski area but feel slightly different: Bettmeralp is often chosen for its central position on the terrace and direct access to the Bettmerhorn glacier views, while Riederalp lies at the western end. Either works well as a base.
Returning to Geneva Airport
On your last day, allow time for the cable car down to Betten, then about 2 hours 30 minutes on the road plus a margin. Aim to be at Geneva Airport two hours before your flight. Your chauffeur will be waiting at the valley station at the agreed time, and if weather affects the cable car, we will adjust. Traffic can build around Lausanne on Saturday afternoons.
If you plan to continue elsewhere after your ski week, such as Zermatt, Saas-Fee or the Bernese Oberland, we can arrange a one-way transfer from Betten. Brig is a natural crossroads for the Valais, so linking resorts is simple with a chauffeur.
