Getting from Geneva Airport to Val Cenis

The route heads south on the A41 to Chambéry, then joins the A43 up the Maurienne valley towards Italy. The motorway ends near Modane at the entrance to the Fréjus tunnel; instead of going through, you continue on the valley road through the Haute Maurienne, past Termignon, to Lanslebourg and Lanslevillard, the two villages that make up Val Cenis.

The Haute Maurienne road is a valley route rather than a steep mountain climb, which makes Val Cenis relatively easy to reach in winter. It is nonetheless at altitude, so snow is common and winter equipment is required. The Maurienne motorway carries heavy lorry traffic on weekdays and holiday traffic on Saturdays in high season.

Skiing in Val Cenis

Val Cenis has a medium-sized ski area rising above Lanslebourg and Lanslevillard towards the Col du Mont-Cenis. It is particularly appreciated by families and beginners because of its long, gentle runs: the most famous of them, known as L'Escargot, follows the route of the Mont-Cenis pass road, closed to traffic in winter, and makes a long, easy descent.

Beginners appreciate that they can ride lifts to the upper slopes and still find an easy way back to the village, which is not true of every resort. Intermediate skiers will find a good range of blues and reds, many through the trees, and expert skiers can explore some steeper terrain and off-piste in the upper sectors after fresh snow, always with a guide. The ski area also extends towards Termignon, further down the valley, adding variety.

The villages and the Haute Maurienne

Unlike purpose-built resorts, Val Cenis is made up of traditional villages, with stone houses, Baroque chapels and a lived-in atmosphere. Lanslevillard and Lanslebourg each have their own shops, restaurants and services, and the pace is gentle.

The Haute Maurienne lies at the edge of the Vanoise National Park, and the valley has a rich heritage of Baroque art, with richly decorated churches and chapels. Non-skiers can enjoy snowshoeing, cross-country skiing in nearby Bessans, winter walks, and the scenery of the high valley. Bessans is also known for its painted wooden devils, a local craft.

Above Lanslebourg, the Mont-Cenis pass was for centuries one of the main routes between Savoy and Piedmont, used by armies, traders and travellers heading for Italy. The road over the pass is closed in winter, and part of it becomes a ski run, but in summer it leads to a large lake and a high plateau. This history explains the presence of old fortifications and inns along the valley.

When to go and practical tips

The season usually runs from mid-December to April. January is quiet, February is busy with French and European school holidays, and March offers longer days and good snow. The Haute Maurienne's position near the Italian border means it can catch snow from Italian weather systems.

  • Allow for the Saturday peak on the Maurienne motorway.
  • Declare skis, snowboards and sledges at booking.
  • Request child seats in advance for young children.
  • Bring supplies if self-catering, though the villages have shops.

Returning to Geneva

The return journey follows the same route. Allow 2 hours 30 minutes plus a margin for traffic and weather, and aim to be at Geneva Airport two hours before your flight. On peak Saturdays, an early start is advisable. If snow is forecast, we may suggest an earlier pick-up time.

Families often find that a short pause on the motorway helps young children cope with the journey. Your chauffeur can stop at a service area on the way, and the time for that is easily included when you choose your pick-up. If you are flying out on a Sunday or midweek, the trip is generally quicker.
