Riederalp

Riederalp is 220 km from Geneva Airport, about 2 hours 30 minutes by road to the valley station at Mörel, followed by a cable car ride up to this car-free village. The route stays in Switzerland. It sits in the Aletsch Arena, above the Great Aletsch Glacier, and AirportsTransfers.ch will drive you to the cable car with all your luggage.

  • Distance from GVA: 220 km to the Mörel cable car
  • Drive time: about 2 h 30, then a cable car
  • Border crossing: none, the route is entirely Swiss
  • Ski area: Aletsch Arena, with Bettmeralp and Fiesch-Eggishorn
  • Suits: families, intermediates and glacier views

Getting from Geneva Airport to Riederalp

The road runs around Lake Geneva past Lausanne and Montreux, then up the Rhône valley via Martigny, Sion and Visp to Brig. Beyond Brig, the valley road continues towards the Goms, and a few kilometres later you reach Mörel, home of the valley station for Riederalp's cable car.

Riederalp is car-free, so the journey ends at Mörel. Your chauffeur unloads your luggage and skis at the cable car, where you take the lift up to the village. Luggage services in the village can bring heavy bags to your accommodation, usually by electric vehicle. The motorway and valley road are straightforward, but heavy snow can slow progress beyond Brig.

By public transport the journey involves trains to Brig and a regional train or bus to Mörel, with luggage to handle at each step. A private transfer simplifies that into a single leg, which matters most when travelling with children, skis and a week's worth of winter clothing.

Skiing in the Aletsch Arena

Riederalp is part of the Aletsch Arena, a ski area that also includes Bettmeralp and Fiesch-Eggishorn, linked by lifts and pistes along a sunny mountain terrace. The terrain offers a wide range of blue and red runs, with sweeping views over the Rhône valley and the Valais Alps, and it is a pleasant area for intermediates and families.

From Riederalp, lifts lead up to the Moosfluh area, where the view opens up over the Great Aletsch Glacier, the largest glacier in the Alps. The glacier and its surroundings are part of the Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch UNESCO World Heritage Site. Strong skiers will find steeper runs on the Eggishorn side and off-piste after fresh snow; take a guide for anything off the marked runs.

A car-free village above the glacier

Riederalp is a quiet, car-free village of chalets spread across the terrace, with a calm atmosphere and spectacular views. Without traffic, children can move around safely, and the pace of life is relaxed. Restaurants and a few shops cover the essentials.

With no cars on the terrace, the village is a natural fit for families with young skiers. The gentle slopes close to the chalets make it easy for young skiers to start, while parents can reach more varied terrain across the Aletsch Arena. The car-free setting means that walking to ski school in the morning is part of the routine rather than a battle with traffic and parking.

Above the village, the Aletsch forest is one of the oldest in Switzerland, home to ancient stone pines and larches, and the historic Villa Cassel, built for a British banker in the early 20th century, houses a nature centre. In winter, marked winter walking trails and snowshoe routes along the ridge allow non-skiers to enjoy the glacier views, and sledging is popular.

When to go and practical tips

The season generally runs from December to April. The terrace enjoys plenty of sunshine, making it pleasant in midwinter, and the altitude helps keep snow conditions good. February is the busiest month; January and March are often quieter.

  • Pack sensibly: luggage needs to travel by cable car and then within the car-free village.
  • Declare skis and snowboards when booking so the vehicle has room.
  • Check accommodation luggage arrangements before arrival.
  • Bring sunglasses: the glacier views are bright on sunny days.

Returning to Geneva Airport

On departure day, allow time for the cable car down to Mörel, then the 2 hours 30 minutes drive plus a buffer. Aim to reach Geneva Airport two hours before your flight. Your chauffeur will be waiting at the valley station at the agreed time, and if the cable car is delayed by weather, we can adjust.

If you are combining Riederalp with a stay elsewhere in Switzerland, for example a few days in Zermatt or the Bernese Oberland, we can organise one-way transfers between resorts. Since Riederalp is close to Brig, a hub for the Valais and the Simplon route, many itineraries are easy to link with a chauffeur.
