The route from Geneva Airport to the Lötschental
The motorway takes you around Lake Geneva, past Lausanne and Montreux, then up the Rhône valley via Martigny and Sion. Beyond Sierre the valley becomes German-speaking. Near Gampel and Steg, you turn north into the mountains on the road towards Goppenstein, where the Lötschberg car train departs for the Bernese Oberland. Instead of taking the train, you continue into the Lötschental, a high, secluded valley whose villages include Ferden, Kippel, Wiler and Blatten.
Most visitors reach Lauchernalp by cable car from Wiler, the valley station. Your chauffeur will drop you at the cable car with your luggage or at your accommodation in the valley, depending on where you are staying. The road into the Lötschental is kept open in winter, but it can be affected by snow, so allow extra time in bad weather and be aware that avalanche protection measures may occasionally affect the valley road.
Skiing at Lauchernalp
The Lauchernalp ski area is small but high, climbing towards the Hockenhorn ridge with views across the valley to the peaks of the Bietschhorn and beyond. Its altitude gives it good snow conditions through the season, and the slopes are mostly open, with a mix of blues and reds well suited to intermediates and families. Beginners have gentle areas near the top station.
For experienced skiers, the ski area is a starting point for off-piste and ski tours, including routes towards the glaciers at the head of the valley. These require a qualified guide and full equipment. The Lötschental is also excellent for cross-country skiing and winter walks along the valley floor.
A valley of traditions
The Lötschental is known for its well-preserved villages of dark wooden houses and for its traditions, the most famous being the Tschäggättä, figures in fearsome carved wooden masks and fur costumes who roam the villages around carnival time. The masks are a well-known local craft, and the valley's culture is a reason to visit in its own right.
Life here is calm, with a few hotels and holiday chalets and only limited shopping. Lauchernalp itself is a small cluster of chalets and accommodation near the slopes, giving a peaceful mountain atmosphere where evenings are spent in restaurants or at home rather than in bars. It suits families and anyone looking for quiet.
The valley was long isolated, reached only on foot over high passes or up the gorge from the Rhône valley, and that isolation helped preserve its customs and architecture. Today the Lötschberg railway runs through Goppenstein at the mouth of the valley, and the road makes the Lötschental easy to reach, yet once inside it still feels remote. A walk between the villages of Kippel and Blatten, past old wooden granaries and small chapels, gives a good sense of the place.
When to go and practical tips
The ski season generally runs from December to April. Spring is a good time for ski touring, while midwinter offers cold, reliable snow. Swiss school holiday weeks in February are busiest; outside those weeks the slopes are often very quiet.
- Check the cable car arrangements and luggage handling at Wiler before arrival.
- Bring supplies if self-catering, as shops at altitude are limited.
- Declare skis, snowboards and touring kit at booking so there is room in the vehicle.
- Allow extra time on the valley road after heavy snowfall.
Returning to Geneva Airport
For the return, plan the cable car descent to Wiler before your pick-up time, then allow around 2 hours 30 minutes on the road plus a margin. Aim to reach the airport two hours before your flight. The Rhône valley motorway can be busy on Saturday afternoons, especially around Lausanne, so an earlier start is sensible.
Families travelling with young children should allow for the time it takes to get luggage and skis down by cable car. Leaving a little earlier than strictly necessary means a calm handover at Wiler, where your chauffeur will be waiting with the vehicle ready to load.
