Fiesch
Fiesch is about 230 km from Geneva Airport, a drive of around 2 h 35 min along Lake Geneva and up the Rhône valley past Brig into the lower Goms. From the village a gondola rises to the Aletsch Arena, the ski area shared with Bettmeralp and Riederalp, high above the Aletsch Glacier. AirportsTransfers.ch drives you straight to Fiesch, where unlike its car-free neighbours, the road goes all the way to your door.

Route from Geneva Airport
The journey starts on the A1 along the north shore of Lake Geneva, passing Lausanne and the terraced vineyards above Vevey, before the A9 turns into the Rhône valley at Villeneuve. You then follow the broad, flat valley floor through Martigny, Sion and Sierre, with the peaks rising steeply on both sides, before continuing on towards Visp and Brig.
After Brig the road leaves the main valley floor and climbs into the Goms, the upper valley of the Rhône. Fiesch is the first sizeable village you reach, sitting at the mouth of a side valley below the Eggishorn. The road is open all winter and well cleared, but it is a mountain road beyond Brig, so allow extra time after heavy snowfall. There are no tolls beyond the Swiss motorway vignette, and no pass to cross.
The Aletsch Arena ski area
From Fiesch a gondola climbs to Fiescheralp, the base of the Fiesch-Eggishorn sector, and the slopes connect along the sunny ridge with Bettmeralp and Riederalp to form the Aletsch Arena. The whole area sits on a south-facing balcony above the Rhône valley, while the ridge itself looks north across the Aletsch Glacier, the longest glacier in the Alps and part of the Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch UNESCO World Heritage area.
The skiing is mostly wide, open, intermediate terrain, with blue and red runs that suit families and those who prefer to cruise. The Eggishorn cable car gives the most famous view of the glacier and access to steeper slopes in good conditions. Experienced skiers will find off-piste options with a guide, but the arena's strength is easy, scenic skiing with plenty of sun.
Fiesch and the car-free villages
Fiesch is a traditional Upper Valais village with dark larch chalets, a church and a railway station on the Matterhorn Gotthard line. It is a practical base for families with lots of luggage because you can drive right to the door, and you can choose each day whether to ski the Aletsch Arena, take the train up the Goms to cross-country trails, or head back down to Brig.
Bettmeralp and Riederalp, by contrast, are car-free villages on the plateau above, reached by cable car from the valley. Some visitors book accommodation up there and travel by transfer only as far as the valley stations at Betten or Mörel. Fiesch remains the simplest option for door-to-door arrivals and late flights.
When to go
The season normally runs from mid-December to mid-April. The sunny aspect makes January pleasant even on cold days, and the plateau-level slopes hold snow well thanks to their altitude. February is the busiest period, with Swiss and European school holidays, but the arena rarely feels as crowded as the bigger Valais names.
Late season often brings excellent spring snow on the upper runs. The Goms valley floor, below Fiesch, is one of Switzerland's established cross-country skiing regions, with long trails linking the villages, and is worth a day even for downhill skiers.
Practical tips
Saturday traffic on the A9 is usually lighter than on the roads to the big French resorts, though the stretch around Lausanne can slow at rush hour. If you arrive in the evening, the drive is often smooth all the way. Winter tyres are standard and chains may be needed occasionally beyond Brig.
Families should think about luggage volume: skis, boots and children's gear for a week rarely fit in a saloon boot. For the trip home, plan around three and a half hours from Fiesch to the airport, with a little extra if it has snowed overnight. Bring Swiss francs or a card for lift passes and small purchases.
Booking a transfer to Fiesch
With AirportsTransfers.ch, the fixed price per vehicle appears before you pay, and payment is made online by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. A chauffeur waits for you in arrivals with a name sign and tracks your flight, so a late landing is absorbed with waiting included. Pick a Mercedes E-Class for up to three passengers, an S-Class for extra comfort, a V-Class for up to seven passengers with skis, or a Sprinter minibus for groups.
Declare skis at booking, request child seats if needed and add the return transfer in one go. Bookings and questions are handled 24/7 on +41 78 346 56 77 by phone or WhatsApp.
