Sestriere

Sestriere sits at the heart of the Via Lattea (Milky Way) ski area on the Italian side of the Alps, a resort that hosted alpine events of the 2006 Turin Winter Olympics. Flying into Geneva and continuing by private car avoids train changes in the Susa valley and gets skiers, families and groups to their hotel with all their equipment in one go.

Chauffeur's tipSnow chains are carried in winter, but allow extra time on Saturdays when the Fréjus Tunnel and the climb from Oulx to Sestriere are busiest with weekly changeovers.

The route from Geneva to Sestriere

From Geneva Airport your chauffeur heads south into France on the A41 towards Annecy and Chambéry, then follows the A43 up the Maurienne valley. At Modane the road enters the Fréjus Tunnel, which crosses the border into Italy and emerges near Bardonecchia. The A32 then descends the Susa valley to Oulx, where the mountain road climbs through Cesana Torinese to the Sestriere col. Around 241 km and roughly two and three quarter hours, most of it on motorway.

Arriving in Sestriere

Sestriere is a compact purpose-built resort, so the car can usually stop right at your hotel or residence entrance. Lifts of the Via Lattea start close to the centre, linking the slopes towards Sauze d'Oulx, Sansicario, Cesana and Claviere. If you are staying in one of these neighbouring villages instead, simply give the exact address when booking: the fixed price is shown before you pay, and the chauffeur goes directly to your door.

Practical advice for your transfer

Mountain transfers in the Italian Alps reward good preparation, especially in the heart of the ski season when everyone arrives on the same day.

  • Declare skis and snowboards at booking so that AirportsTransfers.ch sends a vehicle with enough room; the Mercedes V-Class takes up to 7 passengers and their skis.
  • Your flight is tracked and waiting time is included if it lands late.
  • Book the return trip at the same time and plan to leave Sestriere early enough to absorb tunnel queues on departure day.
  • Child seats are available on request; mention the ages of your children when booking.

Sestriere: questions and answers

54 questions answered

How long is the drive from Geneva Airport to Sestriere?
The road distance is about 241 km and the drive takes around 2 h 45 in normal conditions. Winter Saturdays and snowfall on the Fréjus approach can add time.
Can I bring skis and snowboards to Sestriere?
Yes. Declare them when you book and we assign a suitable vehicle, typically the Mercedes V-Class for up to 7 passengers with skis, or a Sprinter minibus for larger groups.
How do I book and pay for the transfer?
Enter your flight, address and passengers online: the fixed price per vehicle appears before booking and you pay securely by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay.
Can you drop us in Sauze d'Oulx or Claviere instead?
Yes. All the Via Lattea villages are reachable from the same route through the Susa valley; just enter the exact address and the price is recalculated before you confirm.
The route to Sestriere10
How far is Sestriere from Geneva Airport?
Sestriere is about 241 km by road from Geneva Airport. Most of the distance is covered on French and Italian motorways, with only the final climb from Oulx to the Sestriere col on a mountain road.
How long is the drive from Geneva Airport to Sestriere?
Allow around 2 h 45 for the transfer from Geneva Airport to Sestriere in normal conditions. Snowfall on the last mountain section or queues at the Fréjus Tunnel on busy weekends can add time, so a margin is wise in mid-winter.
Which route does the transfer to Sestriere take?
The chauffeur drives south through France on the A41 past Annecy to Chambéry, then up the Maurienne valley on the A43 to Modane. After the Fréjus Tunnel, the A32 descends the Susa valley to Oulx, and the road climbs via Cesana Torinese to Sestriere.
Do you cross a border on the way from Geneva to Sestriere?
Yes, twice. You leave Switzerland for France shortly after Geneva Airport, then enter Italy inside the Fréjus Tunnel. Border checks are rare but possible, so every passenger should carry a valid passport or identity card for the trip to Sestriere.
Do I need to go through the Fréjus Tunnel to reach Sestriere?
In practice, yes: the Fréjus Road Tunnel between Modane and Bardonecchia is the most direct link from Geneva to the Susa valley and Sestriere. The tunnel toll is part of the fixed transfer price, and your chauffeur handles any queue or safety spacing inside.
Is the road to Sestriere passable in winter, and are snow chains needed?
The motorways and the road from Oulx to Sestriere are cleared regularly, as the resort relies on winter traffic. Our vehicles carry snow chains in winter and chauffeurs are used to Alpine conditions, fitting them only when snow on the col makes it necessary.
How long does the transfer to Sestriere take on a Saturday in the ski season?
On changeover Saturdays the drive to Sestriere can take noticeably longer than 2 h 45, mainly because of traffic at the Fréjus Tunnel and on the climb from Oulx. Landing early in the day or travelling on another day of the week usually means a smoother journey.
Can we stop on the way to Sestriere?
Yes. A short comfort stop at a motorway service area in the Maurienne valley or near Oulx can easily be made during the transfer to Sestriere. Mention it to your chauffeur, or note a longer planned stop when booking.
Is there an alternative route from Geneva to Sestriere?
If the Fréjus Tunnel is closed or heavily congested, the chauffeur can take the Mont Blanc Tunnel and the Aosta Valley towards Turin, then head up the Susa valley. This is longer, so it is used only when conditions on the usual route require it.
Can I get a transfer to Sestriere after a late-evening landing in Geneva?
Yes, transfers to Sestriere run at any hour, including late at night. With almost three hours of driving, a late arrival means reaching the resort in the early morning, so let your accommodation know you will check in late.

How do I book a private transfer from Geneva Airport to Sestriere?
Book online on AirportsTransfers.ch: enter Geneva Airport and your Sestriere address, choose the date, the number of passengers and a vehicle, then pay. You receive a confirmation straight away with the details of your transfer.
Is the price of the Sestriere transfer fixed?
Yes. The price for Geneva Airport to Sestriere is fixed per vehicle, not per person, and it is shown before you pay. It does not change with traffic at the Fréjus Tunnel or snow on the road.
What is included in the transfer price to Sestriere?
The fixed price covers the vehicle and chauffeur, fuel, motorway tolls in France and Italy and the Fréjus Tunnel toll. Waiting time is included if your flight is late, so a delayed landing costs nothing extra.
How can I pay for my Sestriere transfer?

How far in advance should I book a transfer to Sestriere?

Yes. Add the return journey from Sestriere to Geneva Airport in the same booking, with your departure date and flight time. Both legs are then confirmed together at a fixed price.
Can my company get an invoice for a Sestriere transfer?

What happens if I need to cancel my Sestriere transfer?
Please see our cancellation conditions at booking; they are shown before you confirm your transfer to Sestriere. You can also contact us to change a date or time if your holiday plans move.

Should I land in the Swiss or French sector of Geneva Airport for Sestriere?
Either works. Most passengers arrive in the Swiss sector; if you land in the French sector, say so when booking and the chauffeur meets you there, which can make the road into France towards Sestriere even more direct.
What if my flight to Geneva is delayed before my Sestriere transfer?
Your flight is tracked, so the chauffeur adjusts to the actual landing time. Waiting time is included if your flight is late, and the transfer to Sestriere simply starts when you come through arrivals.

What time should I leave Sestriere to catch a flight from Geneva?
Plan to leave Sestriere at least five hours before your flight: almost three hours of driving, a margin for the Fréjus Tunnel and mountain weather, then check-in. On Saturdays in winter, add more time.
Does the transfer from Sestriere go to the right Geneva terminal?
Yes. Tell us whether your flight leaves from the Swiss or French sector of Geneva Airport and the chauffeur drops you at the correct departures entrance after the drive from Sestriere.

The Business Sedan E-Class suits up to 3 passengers with 3 bags, and the First Class S-Class adds comfort for a long Alpine drive. Families and groups heading to Sestriere usually choose the Van V-Class, for up to 7 passengers and 10 bags.
Are child seats available for the transfer to Sestriere?
Yes, child seats and boosters are provided on request. Give the ages of your children when booking your Sestriere transfer so the right seats are fitted before pick-up.
Can I bring my dog on the transfer to Sestriere?
Pets can often travel, but please ask at booking for the transfer to Sestriere, giving the size of the animal and whether it travels in a crate, so we can confirm a suitable vehicle.
Is the Sestriere transfer suitable for passengers with reduced mobility?
Please ask at booking. Tell us about any wheelchair, walking aid or assistance needs and we will advise on the right vehicle; the chauffeur helps with luggage and boarding at Geneva and in Sestriere.
Can I bring oversized luggage or extra equipment to Sestriere?
Yes, as long as it is declared when booking. Mention large bags, ski touring kit or several pairs of skis per person, and a vehicle with enough space for the trip to Sestriere will be planned.
