Claviere

Claviere is a small Italian village on the Montgenèvre pass, right on the border with France, and one of the most compact bases of the Via Lattea ski area. Its lifts connect directly with Montgenèvre and towards Cesana and Sestriere. It suits couples and families who like a small village with a big ski area. A private car takes you there from Geneva in one go.

Chauffeur's tipClaviere is just a few hundred metres from France; if you stay on the Montgenèvre side, check the exact address so we drop you in the right country.

The route from Geneva Airport

Your chauffeur crosses into France and follows the A41 south to Chambéry, then the A43 up the Maurienne valley to Modane. After the Fréjus Road Tunnel, you are in Italy at Bardonecchia. The motorway descends to Oulx, and the road then climbs through Cesana Torinese to Claviere, just below the Col de Montgenèvre. The trip takes around two hours forty-five in normal conditions.

Arriving in Claviere

Claviere is a small village of a few streets, with hotels and apartments close to the lifts and the border. The ski area links directly with Montgenèvre in France and with Cesana and Sansicario in Italy, so the whole Via Lattea is within reach. In winter there is also cross-country skiing nearby, and in summer the village is popular with walkers and golfers. Your driver drops you at your accommodation door. AirportsTransfers.ch can also take you on to Briançon or Turin.

Practical advice

  • The route crosses the Swiss–French and French–Italian borders; keep your documents handy.
  • Declare skis and snowboards when booking.
  • The V-Class van takes up to 7 passengers and 10 bags; the S-Class offers extra comfort for couples.
  • Child seats are available on request.

The road up from Oulx is busy on winter Saturdays, and snow can slow the last climb. Book your return trip at the same time for a smooth end to your stay.

The route to Claviere10
How far is Claviere from Geneva Airport?
Claviere is about 237 km from Geneva Airport by road. The route crosses France via Chambéry and the Maurienne valley, passes through the Fréjus Road Tunnel into Italy and climbs from Oulx to the village just below the Col de Montgenèvre.
How long is the drive from Geneva Airport to Claviere?
The transfer to Claviere takes around 2 h 45 in normal conditions. Winter Saturdays, queues at the Fréjus tunnel or snow on the final climb from Oulx can add time, and your chauffeur plans accordingly.
What route does the chauffeur take to Claviere?
Your chauffeur follows the A41 south to Chambéry, the A43 up the Maurienne valley to Modane and the Fréjus Road Tunnel into Italy at Bardonecchia. The motorway descends to Oulx, then the road climbs via Cesana Torinese to Claviere.
How many borders do I cross on the way to Claviere?
Two. You leave Switzerland for France shortly after Geneva Airport, then enter Italy through the Fréjus Road Tunnel. Keep your passport or ID card handy for the drive to Claviere.
Is the Fréjus tunnel toll included in the Claviere transfer?
Yes. Motorway tolls in France and the Fréjus tunnel toll are part of the fixed price for your Claviere transfer, so there is nothing to pay on the way.
Is the road to Claviere open in winter?
Yes. The road from Oulx through Cesana to Claviere is a main route over the Montgenèvre pass and is kept open in winter, although heavy snow can slow the final climb. Our vehicles have winter tyres and carry chains when required.
How long does the Claviere transfer take on a winter Saturday?
On Saturday changeover days, traffic in the Maurienne, at the Fréjus tunnel and on the road up from Oulx is heavier, so allow extra time beyond the usual 2 h 45. Arriving in Geneva in the morning usually helps.
Can we stop on the way to Claviere?
Yes, just ask your chauffeur. A coffee break in the Maurienne before the tunnel or a quick shopping stop in Oulx before the climb to Claviere are easy to fit in.
Can I get to Claviere if my flight lands late at night?
Yes. Transfers to Claviere run 24/7, so a late arrival in Geneva is covered. Tell your hotel or apartment owner that you will check in after midnight so someone can welcome you.
Is there an alternative route to Claviere if the Fréjus tunnel is closed?
Yes. Your chauffeur can drive via Grenoble and the Col du Lautaret to Briançon, then climb over the Col de Montgenèvre to Claviere. This route is longer but avoids the tunnel when needed.
