La Grave
La Grave is about 232 km from Geneva Airport, a drive of around 2 h 45 min via Grenoble and the Romanche valley to the foot of La Meije. It is not a conventional resort but a high-mountain freeride destination, where a cable car gives access to largely ungroomed, unpatrolled terrain. AirportsTransfers.ch takes you there privately from arrivals, with skis, packs and avalanche gear loaded at the kerb.

Getting there from Geneva Airport
From Geneva the route enters France almost immediately and follows the A41 south past Annecy and Chambéry to Grenoble. From the city you head east on the road towards Briançon, through Vizille and the Romanche valley to Le Bourg-d'Oisans, then up through a series of gorges and tunnels past the Chambon lake to La Grave.
The final section, after Le Bourg-d'Oisans, is a mountain road exposed to rockfall and avalanche risk in some winters, and it has occasionally been closed for long periods. When that happens, the alternative is a longer drive via the Maurienne, the Fréjus Tunnel, Italy and Briançon, then over the Col du Lautaret. Your chauffeur checks the road situation before departure and plans accordingly.
What skiing in La Grave means
La Grave is famous among skiers for one reason: big, wild, high-mountain terrain under La Meije, a striking peak of close to 4,000 metres in the Écrins massif. A cable car climbs in stages from the village towards the Girose Glacier, and from there skiers descend long off-piste routes back to the valley. There are very few groomed runs, mainly on the glacier at the top.
This terrain is not patrolled or protected like a normal ski area. Glaciers, crevasses, cliffs and avalanche slopes are part of the landscape. Unless you are an expert with solid mountain experience, hire a qualified mountain guide, carry a transceiver, shovel and probe, and know how to use them. Beginners and cautious intermediates will be happier basing themselves in a neighbouring resort such as Serre Chevalier and visiting La Grave on a guided day.
The village
La Grave is a small, stone-built village on a steep slope facing the north face of La Meije, with the glaciers almost directly above the rooftops. Along with Villar-d'Arène, just up the road, it sits on the edge of the Écrins National Park and keeps a strong mountaineering culture: many visitors are climbers, ski tourers and guides rather than holidaymakers in search of nightlife.
Evenings are quiet. Accommodation is mostly in small hotels, guesthouses and apartments. The Col du Lautaret, a short drive further on, opens views towards the Briançon side and is a popular start for ski touring.
When to go
The cable car generally operates from around Christmas into the spring, depending on snow and conditions. Mid-winter often brings cold, light snow on the north-facing slopes, while late winter and spring offer longer days and more stable snowpacks, which many guides prefer for the big descents. Weather can close the upper sections, so build flexibility into your plans.
Avoid fixing your dream run for a specific day: talk to a guide on arrival and let the snowpack decide the programme.
Practical tips
Saturday traffic around Grenoble can be heavy during the French school holidays, and the Romanche road is slower than its distance suggests. Leaving Geneva early or arriving midweek helps. Pack avalanche equipment, a harness if your guide requests one, and layers for cold days on the glacier.
Bulky freeride skis and touring packs take space, so groups are often more comfortable in a van. For the return, allow at least three and a half hours to Geneva Airport, more if snow or roadworks affect the valley roads.
How to book your transfer
AirportsTransfers.ch shows a fixed price for the whole vehicle before payment, and you pay securely online by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. Your chauffeur meets you with a name sign in arrivals, tracks your flight and waits if it lands late, at no extra cost. A Mercedes E-Class takes three passengers with three bags, the V-Class up to seven with skis and equipment, and the Sprinter suits guided groups.
Declare skis, splitboards and bulky bags at booking, ask for child seats if needed and reserve the return journey in the same order. Reach us 24/7 on +41 78 346 56 77, by phone or WhatsApp.
