La Grave

La Grave faces the glaciers of La Meije in the upper Romanche valley, below the Col du Lautaret. It is a legendary destination for experienced off-piste skiers and mountaineers, and a peaceful mountain village in summer. A private car is the practical way to reach it from Geneva, as public transport to this isolated village is very limited.

Chauffeur's tipOff-piste gear, ice axes and long ski bags all fit in our vans, but declare them at booking so we send a vehicle with enough room.

The route from Geneva Airport

There are two main ways to La Grave, and your chauffeur chooses according to traffic and road conditions. The first heads south via Annecy or Chambéry to Grenoble, then up the Romanche valley past Bourg-d'Oisans and through the tunnels below the Chambon dam. The second uses the A43 Maurienne motorway and the Fréjus tunnel, then Montgenèvre, Briançon and the Col du Lautaret. Both take around two hours forty-five, with a border crossing into France at the start.

Arriving in La Grave

La Grave is a small village of stone houses on the main road, with the cable car climbing towards the glaciers of La Meije. The terrain here is mostly ungroomed and suited to experienced skiers, often with a mountain guide. Many visitors also stay in the neighbouring hamlets or at Villar-d'Arène. Your driver drops you at your hotel or gîte door. With AirportsTransfers.ch you can also book a later transfer to Serre Chevalier or Les Deux Alpes.

Practical advice

The Romanche valley road can be affected by snow or roadworks, so trust your chauffeur's route choice on the day. A Mercedes V-Class van seats up to 7 passengers with 10 bags and skis, ideal for a group of freeriders with heavy gear. Couples travelling light can choose the E-Class sedan. Declare your equipment and request child seats when booking. If you finish your stay early because of conditions, the return trip can be booked online.

The route to La Grave10
How far is La Grave from Geneva Airport?
La Grave is about 232 km from Geneva Airport by road. The drive heads south through the French Alps, either via Grenoble and the Romanche valley or via the Maurienne and Briançon, and ends in the upper Romanche valley facing the glaciers of La Meije.
How long is the drive from Geneva Airport to La Grave?
Allow around 2 h 45 in normal traffic. Winter Saturdays, holiday changeovers or fresh snow can add time, and your chauffeur adapts the route to the conditions on the day so you reach La Grave as smoothly as possible.
Which route does the chauffeur take to La Grave?
There are two main options. One goes via Annecy or Chambéry to Grenoble, then up the Romanche valley past Bourg-d'Oisans and the Chambon dam. The other takes the A43 Maurienne motorway and the Fréjus tunnel, then Montgenèvre, Briançon and the Col du Lautaret down to La Grave.
Do I cross a border on the way from Geneva to La Grave?
Yes. La Grave is in France, so you cross the Swiss–French border soon after leaving Geneva Airport. If the Fréjus tunnel route is used, the car also passes briefly through Italy before re-entering France at Montgenèvre, so keep your passport or ID card handy.
Is the road to La Grave open in winter?
The road through La Grave links Grenoble and Briançon and is kept open in winter, but snowfall, avalanche risk or roadworks in the Romanche valley can cause delays or temporary closures. Your chauffeur checks conditions before leaving Geneva and takes whichever approach is open.
Do I need snow chains for the drive to La Grave?
You do not need to arrange anything yourself. Winter equipment is required on mountain roads in the Hautes-Alpes during the cold season, and our vehicles run on winter tyres and carry chains when conditions call for them on the climb to La Grave.
How long does the La Grave transfer take on a ski-season Saturday?
Saturday changeovers bring heavier traffic around Grenoble, in the Maurienne and near the Fréjus tunnel, so plan on extra time compared with the usual 2 h 45. Landing in Geneva early in the morning generally gives a calmer drive up to La Grave.
Can we stop on the way to La Grave?
Yes, a short stop is easy to arrange on a drive of almost three hours. Ask your chauffeur for a coffee break at a motorway service area, or a quick shopping stop near Grenoble or Briançon before you reach the small village of La Grave.
My flight lands late at night: can I still get to La Grave?
Yes. Transfers run 24/7, so a late evening landing in Geneva is no problem, although you will reach La Grave well into the night. Let your hotel or gîte know about your late arrival so someone can hand over the keys.
What happens if the Romanche valley road to La Grave is closed?
If the Grenoble side is blocked, your chauffeur switches to the Maurienne, Fréjus tunnel and Briançon approach, coming down to La Grave over the Col du Lautaret. The reverse also works, which is why having two routes is useful for this destination.

About La Grave14
What is La Grave known for?
La Grave is known worldwide for freeride skiing on the slopes of La Meije, with a cable car serving largely ungroomed, high-mountain terrain. It has a strong mountaineering tradition and attracts experienced skiers rather than those looking for a large piste network.
Where is La Grave located?
La Grave is in the Hautes-Alpes department of France, in the upper Romanche valley between Grenoble and Briançon. It sits just below the Col du Lautaret, directly facing La Meije in the Écrins massif.
Is La Grave suitable for beginner skiers?
La Grave mainly suits confident, experienced skiers, because most of its terrain is ungroomed and unmarked. Beginners and families often prefer nearby Serre Chevalier or Les Deux Alpes, or the gentler slopes of Le Chazelet above the village.
Do I need a mountain guide to ski in La Grave?
For most visitors, yes. The terrain under the La Grave cable car includes glaciers, cliffs and avalanche-prone slopes that are not patrolled like a normal piste, so hiring a local guide and carrying avalanche equipment is strongly advised.
What is the La Grave cable car?
The cable car climbs from the village towards the glaciers of La Meije, giving access to long off-piste descents back down to La Grave. In summer it is used by walkers and sightseers for views over the Écrins peaks.
When is a good time to visit La Grave?
Winter and spring suit freeride skiing, with late season often bringing longer days and stable snow. Summer is ideal for hiking, climbing, alpine flowers and cycling the high passes around La Grave.
What can I do in La Grave in summer?
Summer in La Grave means hiking to mountain lakes and refuges, glacier walks with a guide, rock climbing and taking the cable car for the views. Road cyclists use the village as a base for the Lautaret and Galibier climbs.
How do I get around once I arrive in La Grave?
La Grave is a small village strung along the main road, so most places, including the cable car, are within walking distance. For the hamlets above the village or nearby Villar-d'Arène, a car or a chauffeur by the hour is handy.
Where do visitors usually stay in La Grave?

What day trips can I take from La Grave?
Popular outings from La Grave include the alpine garden at the Col du Lautaret, the fortified old town of Briançon and a ski day at Serre Chevalier or Les Deux Alpes. Bourg-d'Oisans and the Alpe d'Huez road are also within reach.

There is no railway station in La Grave. The nearest stations are Grenoble and Briançon, and from Geneva the journey requires several changes followed by a bus, which is tiring with ski equipment compared with a direct private transfer.

La Grave has a long-running freeride race on the slopes of La Meije and occasional mountain culture gatherings, while summer brings village festivities. Check current dates with the local tourist office before planning your stay.
What is the village of La Grave like?
La Grave is a small, traditional mountain village of stone houses and a hilltop church, with a handful of shops, cafés and guiding offices. The atmosphere is relaxed and focused on the mountains rather than on nightlife.
