Getting from Geneva Airport to Wengen
The route takes the motorway to Lausanne and on to Bern, then along the shore of Lake Thun to Interlaken. From Interlaken, the road climbs into the Lauterbrunnen valley, famous for its sheer rock walls and waterfalls, and ends at Lauterbrunnen village, where the railway to Wengen departs.
Wengen is car-free, so the road journey ends at Lauterbrunnen. Your chauffeur will drop you at the station, and the train climbs up the side of the valley to Wengen in a short ride. Many hotels can arrange for luggage to be collected from Wengen station. Lauterbrunnen is used to visitors switching from road to rail, so the handover from car to train is quick, and your chauffeur can help carry bags to the platform. The motorway sections are straightforward, but traffic can build around Bern and Interlaken at peak times.
Skiing in the Jungfrau region
Wengen shares its ski area with Grindelwald, linked via Kleine Scheidegg and Männlichen, in the heart of the Jungfrau ski region. Mürren, across the valley, is a separate area included in the regional pass. From Wengen, a cable car climbs to Männlichen and the railway continues to Kleine Scheidegg, where you ski beneath the north face of the Eiger.
The area offers a large network of runs suited mostly to intermediates, with long, scenic blues and reds. Wengen is famous for the Lauberhorn, home of the World Cup downhill race, known as one of the longest downhill courses on the circuit; recreational skiers can ski much of the course on a normal piste. Beginners have gentle slopes in the village and at Kleine Scheidegg. Off-piste is possible, ideally with a guide.
The village and its setting
The Lauterbrunnen valley below is one of the classic sights of Switzerland, a deep, U-shaped valley carved by glaciers, with dozens of waterfalls spilling over its cliffs, including the Staubbach Falls right beside Lauterbrunnen village. Wengen is a traditional, car-free village of hotels and chalets on a sunny terrace high above the Lauterbrunnen valley. Its views over the valley and the Jungfrau are among the most photographed in the Alps. Without traffic, the village is quiet and safe for children, with shops and restaurants on its main street.
The Wengen area has a long history of British skiing, with early ski clubs founded by visitors in the early 20th century. Non-skiers can enjoy winter walks, sledging, ice skating and a trip by train towards the Jungfraujoch, the high railway station in the glacier world above Kleine Scheidegg.
When to go and practical tips
The season runs from December to April. The Lauberhorn races in January bring crowds and atmosphere; outside that period and the February holidays, the slopes are often quieter. March offers longer days and plenty of sunshine.
- Pack for the train: luggage must be carried onto the railway at Lauterbrunnen.
- Ask your hotel about luggage collection from Wengen station.
- Declare skis and snowboards when booking so the vehicle has enough room.
- Allow extra time on peak weekends around Bern and Interlaken.
Returning to Geneva Airport
On departure day, allow time for the train down to Lauterbrunnen, then about 2 hours 25 minutes on the road plus a margin. Aim to reach Geneva Airport two hours before your flight. Your chauffeur will be waiting at Lauterbrunnen at the agreed time. If you are combining Wengen with Interlaken, Grindelwald or Zermatt, we can organise one-way transfers.
Remember that the train from Wengen runs to a timetable, so check the departures when you plan your pick-up and leave a buffer in case of a busy train on changeover day. Your chauffeur will wait at Lauterbrunnen if you are a little late, but an unhurried start makes the whole journey calmer.
