Why connect Geneva and Bern airports?
Bern is the federal city, seat of the Swiss government and of many federal offices, yet its small airport has a limited airline schedule that has varied over the years, with a focus on general aviation and occasional holiday flights. Geneva, home to United Nations agencies and many international organisations, has a much denser network of airlines. Diplomats, delegations and executives therefore often combine the two: landing on a scheduled flight at Geneva and continuing on a private or official aircraft from Belp, or the reverse. Private jet owners may base an aircraft in Bern, which also gives access to the Bernese Oberland resorts such as Gstaad, Grindelwald and Wengen. Diversions due to weather or runway constraints are another reason to need a road connection. Conference organisers and companies with offices in both cities also use the link to move guests efficiently, since a single vehicle can collect several arrivals at Geneva and deliver them together to a departure at Belp.
The route across the plateau
From Geneva Airport the motorway runs along Lake Geneva to Lausanne, then climbs onto the plateau and continues north-east past Fribourg, the bilingual city on the language border, towards Bern. Instead of entering the capital's centre, the car follows the motorway around its southern side and towards Thun, leaving at the exit for Belp. The airport sits in the flat Aare valley with the Gantrisch hills and, on clear days, the peaks of the Bernese Alps in view. Under normal conditions the drive takes just under two hours. Rush hours around Lausanne and Bern are the main sources of delay, and occasional roadworks on the plateau may add a few minutes.
Train or private car?
Intercity trains connect Geneva Airport with Bern station frequently, and the journey is comfortable. From Bern station, however, Belp airport requires a further connection by local train, bus or taxi, plus a short transfer from the stop to the terminal. For someone with light luggage and plenty of time, that can work well. But when you are catching a private flight with a fixed slot, travelling with several suitcases or sports equipment, or moving as a delegation that needs to stay together, a car from the arrivals hall at Geneva straight to the terminal at Belp is simpler and more predictable. It also allows confidential calls or work during the journey.
What your transfer includes
The chauffeur tracks your flight, waits for you in Geneva's arrivals hall with a name sign, and absorbs any delay at no extra cost. Vehicles are all Mercedes: E-Class for up to three passengers and three bags, S-Class for executive and official travel, V-Class for up to seven passengers and ten bags, and Sprinter for larger delegations or teams. Child seats are available on request. Companies and organisations can receive an invoice, and a chauffeur can be retained by the hour (minimum two hours) if your programme includes meetings in Bern before the flight.
Timing your departure from Belp
Smaller airports are quick to navigate, but you still need to respect your operator's or handler's deadlines. Add the drive time, a margin of around thirty minutes for traffic, and the time your crew or handler asks for. If you arrive at Geneva on an airline before connecting, include baggage reclaim and possible queues at passport control. Should your private flight be moved, cancelled because of weather or redirected to another airport, let us know right away so we can adjust the route.
