Chambéry Airport
Chambéry Airport is 90 km from Geneva Airport by road, about one hour and five minutes south via the motorway into France. With no simple public transport link between the two, a private transfer with AirportsTransfers.ch is the most direct way to connect a flight at Geneva with one at Chambéry, especially in the ski season when both airports are at their busiest.
- Distance: 90 km by road
- Drive time: about 1 h 05
- Border crossing: the route crosses the border into France
- Busiest period: winter weekends, with ski charter flights
- Location: at the southern tip of Lac du Bourget, north of Chambéry
Why travel between Geneva and Chambéry airports
Chambéry Savoie Mont Blanc Airport is a compact regional airport whose traffic is dominated by winter: charter and seasonal flights bring skiers heading for the Tarentaise valley and resorts such as Courchevel, Méribel, Val Thorens and La Plagne. Geneva handles a far wider range of scheduled flights all year round. Travellers end up needing both for several reasons: a ski group arriving on a charter into Chambéry but flying home from Geneva; a diversion when bad weather or a technical problem sends a flight to the other airport; a cheaper fare available from one of the two; or a private aircraft based at Chambéry while passengers land at Geneva. The airport is also used by business aviation throughout the year. In summer, when charter traffic is light, the lakeside setting and the nearby spa town of Aix-les-Bains make Chambéry a pleasant arrival point for travellers exploring Savoie, and a road link to Geneva remains useful for anyone combining the two regions.
The route
From Geneva Airport the car crosses towards the French border south of the city and joins the A41 motorway, which runs past Annecy before continuing south towards Aix-les-Bains and Chambéry. The airport sits beside the southern end of Lac du Bourget, France's largest natural lake, between Le Bourget-du-Lac and Viviers-du-Lac, so you reach it before entering central Chambéry. Normally the drive takes just over an hour. On winter Saturdays, however, the motorways around Chambéry and towards the Tarentaise are heavily used by holiday traffic, and border crossings out of Geneva can also be slow, so your chauffeur will plan with this in mind.
Train or private car?
Getting between the two airports by public transport involves several steps: a train from Geneva into France, typically with a change, then a local connection from Chambéry or Aix-les-Bains station to the airport. With skis, boot bags and children, those changes quickly become tiring, and services are thinner early in the morning or late at night. A private car avoids all of that: you walk out of arrivals, load everything into one vehicle and are dropped at the terminal door. For groups, sharing a V-Class or Sprinter often makes the cost per person very reasonable. For a lone traveller with only hand luggage and a flexible schedule, public transport may still be an acceptable option.
What your transfer includes
Your chauffeur tracks your incoming flight and waits in the arrivals hall with a sign bearing your name; if the flight is late, the waiting time is included in the fixed price. You travel in a Mercedes adapted to your group: the E-Class for up to three passengers and three bags, the S-Class for executive comfort, the V-Class for up to seven passengers with ten bags and skis, or the Sprinter for larger ski groups. Child seats are installed on request. The chauffeur helps with luggage at both ends and drops you directly at departures in Chambéry.
Timing your connection in winter
Chambéry's small terminal can become crowded on peak Saturdays, when several charter flights depart in a short window. Aim to arrive well before your check-in closes, and add a margin of thirty to forty-five minutes to the normal driving time to allow for weekend traffic. If you are coming from a flight into Geneva, remember that baggage reclaim, especially for ski equipment, can take longer than usual at that time of year. In case of snow, the motorway is treated and remains the most reliable route, but conditions can vary. When your incoming flight is diverted or rescheduled, contact us straight away so we can adjust the pick-up.
