Aix-les-Bains
Aix-les-Bains is 75 km from Geneva Airport, roughly 55 minutes by motorway south into Savoie, France. It is a historic spa town on the eastern shore of Lac du Bourget, the largest natural lake entirely within France, with Roman remains, grand Belle Époque hotels and a long lakeside waterfront. AirportsTransfers.ch provides direct transfers from the terminal, so you can be by the water within an hour of landing.

From Geneva Airport to Aix-les-Bains
The route crosses the border south of Geneva and follows the A41 motorway past Annecy and through the Albanais countryside before reaching Aix. It is a fast, scenic drive with the Bauges mountains on the left. Traffic is usually fluid, though the Annecy section can slow at peak hours and on summer weekends. Aix also has a station on the line between Geneva and Chambéry, so a train is an option, but changes are often needed and the station is a walk or taxi ride from the lakeshore hotels.
Spa heritage and the town centre
Hot springs have been used here since Roman times. Remains from that era, including the Arch of Campanus and the so-called Temple of Diana, stand in the town centre near the old thermal baths. In the nineteenth century Aix became one of Europe's fashionable spa resorts, visited by aristocrats and royalty, and its grand hotels, casino and villas date from that period. Today the thermal establishment continues to offer treatments, especially for rheumatism and joint conditions, and modern spa centres welcome visitors for shorter wellness stays.
The town also has an art museum with works by Rodin and Impressionist painters, and pleasant parks for an afternoon walk. The poet Lamartine immortalised the lake in his famous poem Le Lac, written after a stay in the town, and the romantic reputation has stuck.
Life on Lac du Bourget
The lake is the main draw in summer. The waterfront, with its marinas, beaches, cycle paths and restaurants, stretches for several kilometres. Boat trips cross the lake to the Abbey of Hautecombe, the historic burial place of the princes of Savoy, set dramatically on the western shore beneath the Mont du Chat. Swimming, sailing, rowing and paddleboarding are all popular, and the lake waters are known to be clean and among the warmest of the Alpine lakes in summer.
The northern end of the lake connects to the Rhône via the Canal de Savières, a peaceful waterway that leads to the small village of Chanaz, worth a boat or bike outing.
Where to stay and conferences
Visitors can choose between historic hotels on the hillside, lakeside hotels near the beaches and simpler accommodation in town. Aix-les-Bains also hosts congresses, seminars and festivals thanks to its conference facilities and casino theatre. For organisers flying participants into Geneva, a fleet of minibuses or vans from the airport keeps the schedule tight. Companies can book transfers for groups with fixed prices and invoices.
Day trips from Aix-les-Bains
- Chambéry: the historic capital of Savoy, a short drive south
- Annecy: canals, old town and lake, about half an hour north
- Mont Revard: a plateau above the town with sweeping views over the lake and to Mont Blanc
- Bauges massif: a regional natural park with quiet villages, cheese and hiking
In winter, the Revard plateau offers cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, and larger ski resorts in the Tarentaise are reachable for a day out, though they make a long return trip.
Summer is the liveliest season on the lake, with the waterfront busy from June to September; spring and early autumn are calmer and still mild, and suit spa stays. Many treatments at the thermal centre require advance booking, sometimes with a medical prescription for longer courses, so arrange this before travelling. The town is hilly between the station, the centre and the lakeshore, which is worth remembering if you plan to walk with luggage. For an early departure from Geneva, the motorway is usually clear at dawn, but allow a margin for occasional roadworks around Annecy.
