Oyonnax
Oyonnax is 68 km from Geneva Airport, about 1 hour 10 minutes by road west into the Ain department of France. Set in the forested hills of the Haut-Bugey, it is chiefly known as the heart of the Plastics Vallée, a cluster of plastics and mould-making companies, and as a rugby-loving town surrounded by Jura lakes. Most visitors come on business, and AirportsTransfers.ch offers a direct, fixed-price ride from the terminal to their meetings or hotel.

Getting from Geneva Airport to Oyonnax
From the airport the car heads west out of the canton, crosses into France and follows the A40 motorway along the Rhône and past Bellegarde-sur-Valserine, a section with viaducts and tunnels through the first Jura ridges. A short link road then leads into the Oyonnax valley. In winter, the higher stretches of this route can see snow, but the motorway is well maintained and the journey is generally reliable.
Rail connections are indirect, with changes required, so business visitors rarely use the train for Oyonnax. A private transfer is the usual choice, especially when a team travels with samples, moulds or display equipment, or when a visit has to fit between a morning arrival and an evening departure.
Plastics Vallée: why companies come here
Oyonnax developed from a craft tradition of making combs, first from wood and horn and later from celluloid, which led the town into plastics in the twentieth century. Today the surrounding valley concentrates hundreds of companies working in plastics processing, injection moulding and tool-making, along with training and research centres dedicated to polymers. Buyers, engineers and auditors fly in from all over Europe to visit suppliers.
For these trips, a chauffeur by the hour (minimum two hours) is often more efficient than a rental car: your driver waits during the meeting, takes you to the next site in the valley and back to Geneva for your flight, while you prepare notes in the back seat. Companies can book several transfers for a delegation and receive a single invoice.
The town and its heritage
The town centre is compact and modern in character, rebuilt largely during its industrial expansion. A museum devoted to combs and plastics tells the unusual story of how a mountain town became a centre of the material, with displays of combs, hair ornaments and everyday objects. Rugby is a big part of local life, and the town's club has played at the top level of French rugby; match days bring a lively atmosphere.
Accommodation is mostly business-oriented hotels and guest rooms; some visitors prefer to stay around Nantua or in the Geneva area and commute.
Lakes and forests of the Haut-Bugey
The landscape around Oyonnax is quintessential Jura: dense spruce and beech forests, limestone cliffs and clear lakes. The Lac de Nantua, in a deep valley just south, has a lakeside promenade and gave its name to the classic sauce served with crayfish dumplings, the quenelles Nantua. Lac Genin, a small lake surrounded by forest, is a favourite for walks and picnics in summer and a peaceful spot in every season. Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are possible on the high plateaux in winter.
Further afield, the Valserine valley and the Monts Jura offer more walking, while the Jura Regional Natural Park and its villages are within an hour.
Practical tips for visitors
Weather here is cooler and wetter than in Geneva, and fog is common in autumn, so pack a warm layer even in shoulder seasons. Restaurants often close on Sunday evenings and Mondays. If you have an early flight from Geneva, allow time for possible snow or fog on the motorway and agree a pick-up time with your driver. Mobile coverage is good along the main roads, so you can stay connected during the trip.
